Can I simply switch hard drives in a laptop - assuming they are the same type, etc? I have a damaged laptop that I am selling but want to keep my hard drive and buy another (same) model. If I put my hard drive in my replacement laptop should everything work, assuming the rest of the replacement laptop is OK?

Assuming you know how to take a laptop's hard drive out and replace it, then it will work. However, everything must be -exactly- the same as your old laptop, or it will not work. Make sure the new laptop has the same motherboard, sound, and video cards, at the very least.

Or, rather, it may work if they are different, but you will need to uninstall your old drivers and install new ones. Windows may also detect major hardware changes, and require you to reactivate your copy of Windows (which can be very frustrating if you have lost the activation code that came with Windows).

Yes. You can try. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

If it is the exact same make and model, that will work fine since the hardware is the same. At least make sure it is the same motherboard.
