If it is a standard 56kbps phone line then it requires a standard modem which the laptop should have. You connect via a line exactly like the connection line to your phone and the wall plug. It has 2 identical jacks, one for the wall socket and the other for the computer.

If the line is broadband then you use a modem called a router. That has an identical type of cable which runs from the router to the wall socket. It will also have another thicker wire connected into a socket on the router and to the computer. If you have a wifi router and wifi equipment in the computer then the cable from the router to the computer is optional.

You most likely will not need any special equipment to do this. If you connect from a phone line you will need a spliter or a second jack installed.

Quick installation in 4 easy steps
Step One - Run the CD-ROM
PC Users:
Run the BT Total Broadband CD-ROM and follow the on screen prompts.

If the CD fails to automatically start, open the Start menu, select Run and type D:start.exe where D: is the drive letter of your computer's CD or DVD drive.

Mac Users:
Insert the CD-ROM in your computer's CD or DVD drive and full installation instructions will be provided

Step Two - Plug in Microfilters
You will need to plug a microfilter into every telephone socket you intend to use the phone line for telephone calls, fax data, satellite receivers or a dial-up modem.

If you require more filters, you can buy them online at www.bt.com/shop

Step Three - Choose your connection
You can choose between Ethernet, USB, or both depending on which computing or gaming equipment you wish to set up. The CD-ROM will help you specify the most appropriate choice.

Step Four - Connect to BT Total Broadband with Yahoo!
Plug in your router via your choice of connection as chosen above and connect the power supply.

You are now ready to go online.

Simply double click the BT Total Broadband with Yahoo! icon on the desktop for PC users. For Mac users, you will be presented with the welcome screen. Click on your name to sign in and start using your new BT Total Broadband service.

You will need to provide further information before this question can be answered. Is this BT broadband or dialup? How does your existing computer connect to the Internet?

For connecting multiple computers to the internet the typical method is a router; this could allow either wired or wireless for the laptop. You will need to check if your laptop has built in wireless network capability or a network connection.

You really need to provide a lot more information:

What kind of internet do you have?
Do you have a home network? If so, what are the specs (router, firewall, # PCs)
Does the laptop have an ethernet / wireless card?

Just plug the modem directly into the computer. You will probably want to get a software firewall.
