One day my laptop just quit working. The splash screen would come up only to go to a black screen with a flashing white dot in the corner. No keyboard commands would work besides the one to get into the Bios. My mother managed to wipe everything off of the hard drive, so she could start fresh and run the back-up disk that the computer made when I first got it. Upon running the disk an error came up stating there was a corrupt "boot.ini" file. Can I fix this or should I simply throw the blasted piece of technology into the wall and be done with it? More importantly... what does the file do and what could have caused it to be corrupt?

Boot.ini, is the boot sequence that initates the the programs to open up the Windows program, it can become corrupt if the computer is turned off with out going through the shutdown process, there are programs that the computer has to close out before restarting or shutting down, the issue of formatting the computer was wrong, it could have been solve in the "Safe Mode" area, by wiping the drive clean you erased the entire sequnce to allow the boot program to install.
Take it to a reputable computer tech, have them reinstall the operating system, and if it should happen again "do not" format the computer, these are minor issues, a complete redo is not always nessesary, I am sure your Mother was thinking of you, but unless she is a trained and knowledgeable service person, make sure it is done by someone that can backup there work.
I am a MCSE and A+ tech, and I run a small in-home business that I do thing like this and have come acrossed the many times and it is not a major issue.

If the drive has been formatted, that should have erased the boot.ini file too. I think that "backup" disk you made can only be used from within Windows. If the computer came with restoration disks, run those to install Windows and set everything to the way it was when you first bought it. If you do not have them, contact the manufacturer and they can send you some.

If Windows came installed when you bought it, you take it to the shop to get it fixed. They should have given you the windows disks even if they installed it when they sold it to you.
If you have bought windows disks separately, then you restore it to original by inserting the disk and following the prompts. You can do it yourself, it is easy.
When you follow the prompts, what you are doing is to restore or repair the windows installation.
