I am looking to buy a laptop for myself. I know nothing about them. I only know how to use them. I am looking for just a basic one so I can put my pictures on it from my digital camera and check my e-mail. Can anyone recommend a good one? I am not looking to pay over $1000 for it.

Visit a good retail store that will accept returns without a hassle. You also want to consider the size and weight. While LIGHT is nice, you might want a larger screen and keyboard. You have to SEE this to know what you really would want. Visit STAPLES, as they are an awesome store. Costco is also really worth visiting (obviously, you would JOIN if you found that you like a model that you see).

Look first at Toshiba. These are among the best for several reasons: Reliability, customer service, tech support. Then look at HP or Compaq. I am totally disgusted with DELL laptops and Sony, so avoid those guys and their exploding batteries.

Buy the way, if you really want good value, then ask yourself why you really need a laptop instead of a desktop. Are you really going to carry it around with you? A desk top is more reliable, cheaper, cheaper to expand, does not break. You can aim for spending $800 and get a HUGE screen and awesome DVD burner. You are not locked into proprietary parts, so when the next technology comes out, it will work with your desktop, and not your notebook. Believe me when I say that you will only get about 5 years out of your notebook, but 9 years from a good desktop.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

dont be afraid to pay a little more...........the more you spend the newer the model....which is faster and more.....and will not go out of date soon................but the first thing you MUST look at is SERVICE......warranty and service is the most important.......if you buy a dell laptop get at least a 3 year warranty AND another warranty called complete care..........complete care is exactly what is says......no matter what happens to it.........it is covered.
