I can't get the Volume level bar indicator back onto my screen. I am NOT talking about the icon on the taskbar which opens up the audio levels box. When I used to adjust the sound/mute buttons on my laptop (Dell Insp,Wind XP Pro) I used to get an auto pop up indicator showing what level the sound was being set to. It has vanished! Help!!!

Look on the taskbar and see if you have the Quickset icon there. It's in the shape of a blue Q with a yellow tail sticking out of it. Right click the icon and uncheck 'disable onscreen volume meter.'

If the icon is missing look under Start/All Programs and see if you have a program called Dell Quickset. Follow the arrow to the word 'Quickset' and click on it and the 'Q' icon should appear on the taskbar.

If you don't have the Quickset program you can download it from your downloads page under 'Applications'.

Quickset's main function is to start the power management wizard; however, right clicking the icon lets you enable or disable the Fn keys for volume and screen brightness.

What everyone was telling you about was the little program to do this in Windows, which everyone has. It sounds like you're looking for a little program that's specific to some Dell notebooks.

Calling Dell would be a better way to get an answer about that.

I can't help you but I know exactly what you are talking about if that makes a difference. I just tested mine and it works.

And I wouldn't hold my breath until I called Dell tech support. My SD card reader stopped working about two days after I got my Inspiron 9300 and I have repeated called Dell. Their customer service is based offshore so you end up talking with some guy named "Larry" in India with an accent so thick you can barely understand him (if at all) and he will only tell you that your computer is operating normally. My repeated emails to Dell only get me the same response...
I like Dell computers, I've bought and used them for years, but Dell customer support is worthless.
Am I venting? Sorry.

That feature has nothing to do with the XP. It must be an addon that Dell has.

After much research it seems to be controlled by the Dell QuickSet program. Try reinstalling it.

If this doesn't cure it may be that the key that was assigned to another function? (check in control panel) I believe in dell laptops you have to hold down the Ctrl (?) then the volume? Make sure that function key is working correctly.
