This is for a Mac book pro and I plan to use mostly Final Cut for editing. I know the 7200 would be faster than the 5400 but I don't know how much faster. I would be sacrificing storage space for speed and I'm trying to figure out if that is worth it. On one hand- If I ran out of storage space it would be okay with me if I needed an external drive to store the video files on- On the other hand- If I got an external drive would it just depend on the speed of the external drive and not the internal drive anyway? the 160 gig 5400 is 90 dollars more but I'm not worried about price- Just performance. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

It's hard to say which would be faster. The higher capacity drive might have a higher bit density, making it just as fast as the higher rotational speed drive. Try to find a review for each drive that shows a map of the transfer speed over the space of the drive. Since the outer tracks are physically longer, they hold more data and will transfer it faster since the drive rotates at a fixed speed.

Off hand, I would bet on the 7200 RPM drive since, with that high speed, it is probably optimized for speed over power consumption, noise and heat.

I reckon that you should get the 100gig hard drive and buy a 160 gig external hard drive! Then you have 260gigs for movie editing and personal stuff!

Hope I helped,
John

video editing don't need speed of hard disk.
it need a strong processor and a lot of ram.
i advice you give 160 GB 5400 rpm.
in notebook i don't advice speed of hard more than 5400 rpm.
it will be damaged.

I'd say get the bigger one and not worry about the speed.
