I'm just wondering if that slow of a processor can handle windows xp with decent speed, I have an old extra computer and I'm just wondering if it's worth the trouble to put windows xp on it, or if it's a waste of time.

my mouse all of a sudden stopped working. I've plugged in different ones but they don't work on the computer either. I even tried a brand new mouse...still nothing. Otherwise the pc is working fine using short keys. Any ideas what this could be?

I just purchased a brand new GateWay computer at Best Buy, with 2GB of memory, and Window's Vista Premium Home Edition installed. I purchased an Anti-Virus, and we have Comcast High Speed internet which, of course, comes with it's own Anti Virus software. It feezes up quite frequently, to the point that I can't push Ctrl-ALT-Delete to restart computer. Could this be the new Vista software working out the bugs. Or is it the antivirus's that are installed. I don't think it's the interenet, because sometimes it freezes up when we are not even logged on to the internet. I'd just like to know if I should call the manufacturer of the computer, the Geek Squad at Best Buy, or someone else. Any thoughts?

Ok, so I don't know what happened to it, it just won't turn on?? Its an Advent 3214 and as long as I've had it I could hear the fan, but then recently it sounded different, and now it has just given up

The screen and stuff itself still work but the knowledge that I have of computers only goes as far as a GNVQ in ICT and a soon A Level in Media Studies which doesn't really help

Does anyone know if there's an online manual for this PC that I can download as I have no idea what happened to the orginal, also is there anything that I can do to identify what has happened before phoning a helpline or getting a professional a I have a lot of college work on there, that I'm not so much bothered about, but I fear I have lost all my pictures of holidays, family, friends etc which is what annoys me the most out of the situation

Please when answering be specific, I have already checked all the connections and replaced the fuses of the plugs...

Thanks in advance for all the help guys!!

I have a DELL Diemension 2400 from 2001. 256 memory 40gb hard drive, 2.6G processor. I want to buy a new computer/laptop but my parents say its costs too much. Is it/Will it be cheaper for me to buy some more memory and a new processor for my computer to run faster? If it is can you reccomond some places where I can get the parts. Btw I make games and stuff in C++ and C# and I buy games that demand more memory and faster processing.

My daughters have a shared Dell desktop, that was hit with a virus. Is there a way to retrieve pictures etc without shelling out 'big bucks'? There are many personal pictures including the only copies of wedding pictures etc on the PC.

OK I don't claim to be an expert, but I do know enough about computers and what happened here and when it happened. We got an Excel file from one of our suppliers, linked to another file in their network down there. When you went to open it, it took forever asking if it wanted to link back and stuff. Went to print and it froze up. Then PC restart saying spool writer is missing, gone..what not.
I tried whatever I knew and finally had to call someone, Geek Squad was all I can think of. Anywya they ran all kinds of things and couldn't get it fixed......then the lady said, "Oh yeah, it's a virus" you have to wipe out your hard drive. #1 we do have up to date virus protection on, #2 she said oh it's spyware though that it came in trhough. Now this ALL started exactly when we went to open the Excel file.

Basically, when they don't know do they just blame on virus and say wipe off the hard drive?

when powering up my HP(bout 4ys old) with Windows XP, after few minutes it will power up and shut itself off. The modem lights almost all go blank except for 3 lights. It was doing this for about 3 weeks and I would cut off power and restart it and it worked, now, it powers up but only for a few minutes. Any idea what is causing this??? Any help is greatly appreciated. Could it be a virus, the fan, power source????

My current PC is old & slow and I now want to upgrade with a particular view to getting something not too expensive which will allow me to run the various bits of photographic wizardy which I have.
I don't play games (OK - Solitaire - but that doesn't count!) so I don't need any of the specialist bits for that.
Any advice on what I specifically need to be looking for other than a massive hard disk!?

The motherboard is a Mach Speed Viper K8M8MS Socket 754. The first hard drive is a Seagate 250GB EIDE HD 7200/8MB/ATA-100, and the second hard drive is a Seagate 320GB Serial ATA HD 7200/16MB/SATA-3G.

I am fairly savvy with computers, but when I plug in the power and SATA cables to the power supply and motherboard, the BIOS simply doesn't pick up on the new SATA hard drive. It does stop at the black screen rather than boot up, but even a manual search does not turn up the drive. All suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!
