I just purchased a brand new GateWay computer at Best Buy, with 2GB of memory, and Window's Vista Premium Home Edition installed. I purchased an Anti-Virus, and we have Comcast High Speed internet which, of course, comes with it's own Anti Virus software. It feezes up quite frequently, to the point that I can't push Ctrl-ALT-Delete to restart computer. Could this be the new Vista software working out the bugs. Or is it the antivirus's that are installed. I don't think it's the interenet, because sometimes it freezes up when we are not even logged on to the internet. I'd just like to know if I should call the manufacturer of the computer, the Geek Squad at Best Buy, or someone else. Any thoughts?

One thing you might do is take out the purchased anti-virus program and see what happens. Run belarc to see what you actually have in the computer. It tells all. The cnet and pcworld are sites that are informative sites about computers and Vista problems included.

You might do a restore and go back as far as you can. You have to go step by step. Example, do a complete recovery. Then only load one or two programs that you really need and see what happens. See how the computer runs before you install the other program if it freezes or not. anyway, cnet and pcworld will have stuff on the Vista problems. Next time, list computer model and brand. Some computers are known to have certain problems. Makes it easier to diagnose.

Hi when you first buy a computer it adds a lot of things to the start up. That is, when you start up the computer all kinds of things are running.

What I would do is go to where you buy at and say this to them.

Tell them that it keeps locking up like you said and if you can talk to the tech department tell them that you ONLY WANT necessary items in the start up.

For example your antivirus is Necessary but sometimes they'll add a bunch of other things you don't need Especially with a new computer.

Things that check for updates on printers and such.

You don't want to have 2 antiviruses working at the same time just one.

The key here is the start up programs. There is, most likely, too many things running at once.

Now you do not need to take this to a store to do it if you can find someone that is good with computers like a friend or family member and show them this what I have typed they can go into your start up and help.

But let me give you a crack at it....Go to WINDOWS DEFENDER in Windows. I too have the same premium edition and I have gone through this so when you are in Windows Defender (if you cant find it go to help and it will find it for you) there will be a place you can click on the right that says programs and it shows you all the programs that are loading when you start your computer.

Don't mess with it right now but look at it and you'll see there will be like 9 or 10 programs . I gaurantee you that at least 1/2 you don't even need to start up.

Find someone that you know that is kinda knowledgable about computers and ask them if they know how to edit the Start up programs and they can guide you over the phone on doing it.

The problem is some things are needed to start up and some aren't and you won't know which ones are needed and which ones aren't.

I had a hard time picking through it myself but by doing that it frees up memory and stops the lockups

Gee, I hate to tell you I told you so with Vista, but I told you so! I think you should complain, especially since the computer is nearly new because Vista has only been out about a month.
Vista causes huge problems, because it is brand new and not fixed yet, and wont be fixed for a couple years. If they give you your money back, and they should deduct it from Bill Gates enormous wealth, then get a computer and install a good open source software, like kubuntu, available for free at www.kubuntu.org
