I'm just wondering if that slow of a processor can handle windows xp with decent speed, I have an old extra computer and I'm just wondering if it's worth the trouble to put windows xp on it, or if it's a waste of time.

You will be well advised to first upgrade your ram to the maximum the machine can handle. The dramatic increase in speed will be positively breathtaking. Having DSL will also help you due to 100 times faster surfing and downloading. A bigger hard drive would also be a good idea.

absolutely not. it would not be worth it by any stretch of the imagination to put windows xp on a machine that slow. the slowest computer i would install xp on would be about 750MHz, though even at 1 GHz it doesn't run well when you are doing a lot of work.

If you can get a legal copy of windows 2000 install that on the 300 MHz machine. it should run well and it has most of the security features of windows xp (pre service pack 2). definitely do not install windows 98 though unless you absolultely have nothing else. windows 98 at this point in time is just waiting to be hacked or infected with a virus or something.

now.... if you *have* to install 98 - and if you connect your computer to the internet, make sure you get a virus scanner, keep it up to date, and use a firewall!!!!!

i'd say if none of the above are an option, maybe look at a consumer friendly flavor of linux like ubuntu or redhat. they should work well for word processing and internet and are easy to use.

good luck!

you need loads of ram, as much as your mother board can handle. after installing windows disable all visual schemes and look up on the internet for tips on making xp faster, i meayou have to stop some services and stuff like that to lower ram usage and cpu usage. with the right tweaking i think XP can work on a 300 hz machine.

There's more than just processor speed. Chances are if you have a 300 mhz it doesn't have much in the way of memory. I'd put Win98 on it if I were you.
