I dont want to sound like a commercial for a retailer, but whenever I need to buy memory I usually use the memory configurator found on the tigerdirect.com website. Not only does it tell you the RAM that your computer uses, it returns the ones they sell...

If the link doesnt work, just to go the tigerdirect.com site, click on memory.
Alternatively, I think you could always the computer manufacturer for the info.

You are going to have to give us the actual model number. Compaq Presario 5000 covers a broad range of computers from Compaq. It could be the 5131us, it could be the 5264us it could be any number of different models.

The actual model number is usually on a tag on the top of the computer tower near the back.

Once you find out what the actual model number is you can go to this website to find out what you need. http://www.crucial.com
