It depends; AMD has made both the 939 and AM2 versions. A great deal depends on how old the processor is; Socket AM2 has only been out for about a year or so. If the processor is new as well, then the odds would be with you; I am a little curious why you wouldn't know whether you have a socket 939 or AM2, unless you have an old PC that you are trying to upgrade, in which case it would certainly be 939. If you supplied the model and make it wouldn't hurt, either.

Unless it is a Socket AM2 chip, it will not work in an AM2 socket.
