Here's the problem: No sound.
I used my Dell Dim. Resource CD and my correct driver is installed.
The light to my speakers is on.
When I turn the speakers on, there is power up sound.
When I go through the Hardware Option under Sounds and Audio this is what I see:
Volume: No Audio Device
Audio: No for all three
Voice: No, for both
Hardware: Everything is installed, working properly, volume good, etc., I couldn't see anything that wasn't installed or working properly.

I've been to the Microsoft Website to look for answers, as well as the web.

I have the most up to date software and I've used troubleshooters.

I'm about to rip out all of my hair...please save me before I go bald!!!

Thank you!!!

I downloaded the new Window Vista Ultimate. On my Windows Media Center I have recorded a TV show and now I can't watch it. I get a Video Error, that files needed are not installed or not working correctly, restart Windows Media Center or your computer.

I have done both and I still can't watch my recorded show. I still get the error message. What can I do?

I purchased parts to build my computer and built it around xmas 2005. Computer worked fine until CPU fan started making loud noise in fall 2006. I had left the side of the computer open after installing a second hard drive (old 8 gig HD I had lying around). After shutting comp down, I noticed that one of the blades on the fan had been damaged. I think the noise came from this fan. (Cats were trying to get inside the computer, so i figure it was their doing).

Upon further inspection, I couldn't tell if the noise was coming from the cpu fan or the fan located on the lower left corner of the mother board (dont' know what this fan does).

The noise may have been due to a combination of the two fans. I don't know.

I had installed a second hardrive the computer to a beta version of Vista. It was slow and all screwy so i took it off.

I also tried a version of linux, Ubuntu. From what I can remember, I think it may have tried to install as a dual boot system on my main drive. Anyway, I couldn't get it installed correctly.

I'm not sure if this had anything to do with my problems.

Eventually, my computer wouldn't start up, so i had to recover all the files on my Hardrive and format the drive. I tried installing xp from scratch, and nothign would work. My comptuer would shut down during the set up and at one point i had managed to install xp, but the comp would shut down or lock up.

I also had a problem with my video card. i would have to play with the card's connection to the motherboard in order to get the video to go to my monitor. I trrid several monitors to make sure it wasn't the monitor.

So, given that nothing would work, i gave up. I don't know if any of the above will help you in figuring out what my problem is, and some of it may be irrelevant, but it's everything i can remember about what happened.

Here's some of the components that I used to build the comp:

1. Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz / 512KB L2 Cache / 2000MHz HT / Socket 939 / 64-Bit #15

2. Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum

3. RAM: Samsung 512MB PC-3200 400MHz DDR Memory #76

4. Hard drive: Western Digital Caviar SE / WD800JB / 80GB / ATA/100 / 8MB / 7200RPM / Hard Drive #133

5. Video card: nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 video

So here is the story: My computer is around 4 years old and i have noticed that the performance has degraded quite a bit. Here are some specs:
Pentium 4
2.66 GHZ
1GB of RAM
70GB of Memory
11.7GB of open memory left

I use the average utilities to run a clean computer (norton, registry mechanic, anti-virus, disk defrag, stuff from download.com, etc) but it still kind of sucks. Also i have about 40GB (out of 70GB) dedicated just to music.

Any suggestions on how to make my computer run better? should i buy an external hard drive and put all of my music files on that?

Thanks!

Has anyone confirmed the ability to hotplug SATA hard drives without any issues related to Windows or data and power problems?

eSATA I believe is confirmed to work as it is the purpose of the external standard, right? But what about hotplugging SATA 1.5, and SATA II (3.0gb) Hard Drives internally? Any experiences out there? I believe it's part of the spec, but am leery to try it until I hear it is as common as breathing. Would love to hear your experiences.

Have you had to shut off write back caching for these drives in order to make the OS know they are removeable?
