I purchased parts to build my computer and built it around xmas 2005. Computer worked fine until CPU fan started making loud noise in fall 2006. I had left the side of the computer open after installing a second hard drive (old 8 gig HD I had lying around). After shutting comp down, I noticed that one of the blades on the fan had been damaged. I think the noise came from this fan. (Cats were trying to get inside the computer, so i figure it was their doing).
Upon further inspection, I couldn't tell if the noise was coming from the cpu fan or the fan located on the lower left corner of the mother board (dont' know what this fan does).
The noise may have been due to a combination of the two fans. I don't know.
I had installed a second hardrive the computer to a beta version of Vista. It was slow and all screwy so i took it off.
I also tried a version of linux, Ubuntu. From what I can remember, I think it may have tried to install as a dual boot system on my main drive. Anyway, I couldn't get it installed correctly.
I'm not sure if this had anything to do with my problems.
Eventually, my computer wouldn't start up, so i had to recover all the files on my Hardrive and format the drive. I tried installing xp from scratch, and nothign would work. My comptuer would shut down during the set up and at one point i had managed to install xp, but the comp would shut down or lock up.
I also had a problem with my video card. i would have to play with the card's connection to the motherboard in order to get the video to go to my monitor. I trrid several monitors to make sure it wasn't the monitor.
So, given that nothing would work, i gave up. I don't know if any of the above will help you in figuring out what my problem is, and some of it may be irrelevant, but it's everything i can remember about what happened.
Here's some of the components that I used to build the comp:
1. Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz / 512KB L2 Cache / 2000MHz HT / Socket 939 / 64-Bit #15
2. Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
3. RAM: Samsung 512MB PC-3200 400MHz DDR Memory #76
4. Hard drive: Western Digital Caviar SE / WD800JB / 80GB / ATA/100 / 8MB / 7200RPM / Hard Drive #133
5. Video card: nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 video

well the one problem you have, having to screw with the wire to get the video
thats simple, its just a bad wire
get a new one, or if its imbedded to the monitor,a new monitor
cause all it is is a broken cercut in the wire, it happened to my keyboard(the music one) the adapter was so old it got bent back and forth over the years and now i have to jiggle with it to get a connection to play, its really frusterating
aboutt he computer not starting, well for me ,i ahd that problem not to long ago
i'd start it then it'd shutdown again
there was 2 problems ( it happened twice)
1: there was a program int he startup menu that would shutdown the computer, so all i had to do is get that program out
2: this time is was just bad hardware
one of the components in the computer had been bitten into by a mouse that got in through a hole in the computer where the front usb drive went, we had the hople plugged up and that component replaced and it has worked ever since

Windows startups becomes slower and slower as time goes, this is happening because we are installing more software to it. If these softwares requires loading on windows startup, they will be queuing up whenever you start your windows and thus slowing up the entire process. MSConfig tool of Windows can help you speed up by removing unnecessary programs at startup. Click Start -> Run and type in msconfig. Select Services tab, and scan through the list. Remove anything you think unnecessary to be there. Usually if it’s a Microsoft corporation service, just leave it. Select the Startup tab, remove the software or application you don’t to load at startup. Use Command tells you where the particular application in installed. Things you untick here will not be loaded on the next windows startup. Click Ok, and restart your computer and see if it loads faster now If you messed up the settings, Go to General Tab and select Normal Startup and everything will fall back to original.

All you've done is lay out problem after problem an how you've compounded the problems without giving us any feedback on whether you;'ve fixed anything.
DID YOU REPLACE THE BROKEN FANS?? Overheating will cause your computer to freeze or shut down. So will outdated drivers.
Reommendation: START OVER. Don't go to step 2 until step 1 works correctly. Don't work with faulty equipment. Don't try to use old drivers.
Good Luck

Sounds like it could be any number of factors. I assume you've handled everything whilst wearing an anti-static wrist band/ensuring you're earthed. If not, or if one of the cats has been nuzzling the components then I'm afraid your pc may have suffered fairly major static damage. Which can show up in all kinds of horrid symptoms. The only easy way to check which parts are damaged is to swap them with known working parts.

i would have to play with the card's connection to the motherboard in order to get the video to go to my monitor
Excuse me??? !!! Like, stick your fingers in there while it's on?
I don't know if any of the above will help you in figuring out what my problem is, and some of it may be irrelevant

Hmmm I guessing it might have to do with one of your plug and play devices. I had similar problem like this long time ago when i was installing windows xp from scratch, my computer will just restart when windows xp starts loading. The problem was my hard drive that needed to be replaced. After that it worked well. So check your hard drive.

i would try a couple of things.
sense you have been fiddling around inside it allot first thing i would suggest is check every connection by unplugging and re connecting it firmly.
second, reset the system bios and then reprogram them, assuming you know all the specs of your hardware to do this.
also you might try to update the bios by downloading the latest flash from the manufacturers website, if you corrupted the bios by wiggling things this may fix it.
next do your install again, sense it may of been damaged by having things loose while you installed it before.
lastly if the video card connection is bad, replace the system board you played in it to much, sorry
good luck
