good question but 99 percent of the time the audio is part of the motherboard otherwise known as onboard audio you may need to replace the entire motherboard
if it is a seperate device you can replace it easily just pull out the old one the one your speakers plug into and pop in a new one they slide out after removing just 1 screw from the back of the case

If you have onboard sound all you have to do is add a sound card of your choice to an open "PCI" slot. If you already have a sound card present, then you would turn the power off to your case. Open the side of your case opposite the motherboard. After opening the case ground yourself by touching a bare metal part (to remove any static electricity) of the case if you do not have a wrist strap available. If you do have one connect it to a metal part of the case. Then carefully remove the screw holding your card to the case and the carefully remove the card. Installation of the new card is reverse of removal. If your card came with a driver cd be sure to install the drivers from it as well. Also make sure that your motherboard will support your new audio card (the audio card will have what processor (CPU) speed and or RAM is required for its use.

Shut down your computer, unplug power source, open the case, locate the audio card, unscrew the retaining screw, pull the card out, carefully, go to your local electronics provider, (walmart, best buy, circuit city, local puter shop,) purchase new sound card, return home, remove audio card from packaging, insert into slot, screw in retaining screw, reconnect connections to speakers, etc, close up case, power up, follow any instructions for installation of drivers, and voila', you're done..
PS, even if the card IS integral, you can disable that one and install a new card into a slot, if one is available, just make sure you're installing in the right type slot. Check computer info online, if you are unsure.
