Maintenance & Repairs - July 2007

I have a 2003 car with almost 80,000 miles on it. It's only 4 years old so it seems silly to think about getting a new one, but it's getting up there in mileage. It's a Saturn Ion. I've maintained it pretty well but I'm wondering if cars just start having all sorts of problems around 100,000 miles, even if they are only 4-5 years old?

besides the obvious dent and damage. The way the accident occurred, I hit the vehicle on my left front. (they pulled out in front of me and were at fault). Right away I noticed issues with the blinkers and alignment...but now, a week later, I've noticed bigger differences, in particular with my brakes. The brake and traction light are now on all the time and they've never done it before and my brakes seem to be acting up. It's not that the brakes are old, I got them on May 29, 2007, about 7 weeks ago. I feel this is accident related...can you give me your opinion? If it helps any...my car is a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

So I bought a 2005 Hyundai Elantra, and I'd like to keep it around for a while, meaning I plan on taking care of it as well as I can. The problem is, I know almost nothing about cars, and I am wondering what sorts of maintenance issues I should keep up with on a regular basis. The owner's manual gives me an outline of everything that should be checked and when to check it, but it's a long, confusing list. Obviously I know engine oil has to be changed every couple thousand miles or so, but do I really have to change fuel filters, spakr plugs, hoses, gaskets, transaxle fluid, air cleaner filters, etc. every single time I bring it to the shop for a routine check up? If so, that's fine...I'm just trying to figure out what to ask for when I bring it in to a maintenance center. I guess just asking the service people to look at the whole car and replace anything that is defective or low is stupid? Should I bring in a list of everything that needs to be inspected/replaced a la the manual?

We have a pretty good local mechanic. I say pretty good and not excellent because he isn't free. HA. Takes him a bit longer but there is a savings..

We have an older pontiac sunfire 2001 that suddenly lost the airconditioning from last summer to this summer...possibly during some of the really cold winter months we had here cracked a line or something?

I talked to my mechanic today and he said it could be up to $1500 to replace the evaporator, or - he could use a seal product from Canada and charge it for under $300...but he was going to put it under 50% charge tomorrow and make sure the leak is on the high side and not the low. If it is on the low side, he will charge it so we can use it this summer (or the rest of it), and then next spring sell the car as planned without it working or at least with a disclaimer that it will need recharged regularly.
So my questions are: Does this all sound right? What should I do?

What is the estimated cost to replace the front pads and rotors on a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier? The car was squeaking and this is what Midas said needed to be replaced.

What would be the cost to do it yourself, and how difficult would it be?

My engine started making a "tapping" sound last night on the way home from work. We checked the oil and water and they were fine. Being a female, of course I don't know a lot about cars, so I don't know what else might make this sound under my hood. Help!!! It's an older car, 1992 Pontiac Sunbird and it has always ran great. I don't want to sink a lot of money into it (can't), so who can suggest what might be wrong?

When I turn the key, it takes a long time to crank, but if I pause for 5 seconds, it starts right up. It seems that if the engine’s warm, I can gently accelerate, but if it’s cold, the engine stalls as soon as I tap the gas, and then it continues to stall and won’t stop. According to my friendly neighborhood mechanic, the problem is that the engine isn’t receiving fuel, so we replaced the fuel filter, dumped some cleaner in the gas tank, and reset the electrical system, but nothing made a difference. Also the problem started with it taking a long time to crank, but it had no trouble with stalling or accelerating until the morning when it pretty much died. My mechanic is stumped.
