The noise goes away whenever I release the accelerator, gear down or slow down.

Could be anything -- here are a few to look for.
Worst case - you threw or bent a pushrod... that's bad. If the sound is coming from the inside of the engine block its gonna cost money. Open the hood and see if you can find the noise. It could be an alternator pulley, or A/C pulley. It could be in the driveline, i.e. transmission, driveshaft, differential (rear wheel drive).

Chances are its the exhaust tipping off the underside of you car. Its a simple problem thats easily fixed. Get it up on a ramp and check all the bushing or start it to detect exactly wats making the noise.

How old is your muffler? Have a daughter with a Yukon that the baffles in the muffler have come loose and it rattles like yours.

Timing advanced,cheap fuel,carbon in the head,timing belt slipped.

could be lots, i had a similar problem with my gti, it turned out to be it was the rattling of the heat sheild that is attached to the manifold to the exuast,
