I have converted my system to 134a, so how many cans should go in the system?

See how much R12 was called for in the old system, and multiply by 0.8 to determine the amount of R134a. The R12 capacity will be printed on a label somewhere under the hood, or possibly in your owner's manual.

Edit: A retrofit can be done by changing to R134a fittings, flushing the system, and replacing the compressor, drier/accumulator & TXV/O-tube. You also need to pump it down to 29.5" Hg of vacuum for 20 minutes and make sure it holds vacuum before adding the refrigerant, and each can hold 335g or about 3/4 lb of refrigerant, but I assume you already knew all this!

Enjoy your cold A/C :)

None, if your car has not had a r134 retro fit, the oil in your system is not compatible, you would seize you compressor and debris would be all through it and it would cost a few thousand to repair is as opposed to a few hundred for a retro fit, and the leak would have to be repaired at an additional cost.

It is more important to get the pressures correct. That is the way you judge it is full. Look under the hood and see what the AC unit says it holds. It should be listed in oz.'s. Get at least that much. good luck.
