When I turn the key, it takes a long time to crank, but if I pause for 5 seconds, it starts right up. It seems that if the engine’s warm, I can gently accelerate, but if it’s cold, the engine stalls as soon as I tap the gas, and then it continues to stall and won’t stop. According to my friendly neighborhood mechanic, the problem is that the engine isn’t receiving fuel, so we replaced the fuel filter, dumped some cleaner in the gas tank, and reset the electrical system, but nothing made a difference. Also the problem started with it taking a long time to crank, but it had no trouble with stalling or accelerating until the morning when it pretty much died. My mechanic is stumped.

Is it fuel injected? If so have the fuel pressure checked. May be a week pump. If its not fuel injected have the chock looked at.

Takes long time to crank. Does it crank strong or weak?
I would also run a volt meter across battery terminal to verify that you get least 13v or try the cranking with a battery booster to rule out weak battery problem.

The stalling problem must be something wrong with the fuel injection system. I am guessing that you have some problem with Air intake & air measuring system. Air Mass Meter maybe not functioning properly or you have leak in the system (incorrect amount of air is measured)

How is spark? If you have not changed the spark plugs and wires in past 30,000 miles, I would also replace them.

On some automobiles there's a quit screw you may turn to regulate the place the throttle sits once you're at an idle, yet my significant thought is, Does it kinda rev up a splash, then go down and repeat? if so i might look for a vacuum leak - goodness knows of i've got had a great number of adventure with that.

I doubt that the fuel pump is at fault.I would suspect the main relay.Have an independent Honda specialist perform the diagnosis and repair.

Sounds like you need a fuel pump, starter (cause it is going out) and a new mechanic.
