My engine started making a "tapping" sound last night on the way home from work. We checked the oil and water and they were fine. Being a female, of course I don't know a lot about cars, so I don't know what else might make this sound under my hood. Help!!! It's an older car, 1992 Pontiac Sunbird and it has always ran great. I don't want to sink a lot of money into it (can't), so who can suggest what might be wrong?

sounds like a lifter is sticking, change the oil and filter and go to the parts store and get an additive for sticking lifters and add it to the oil, hopefully it should free it up in a few miles.

You know what a knocking rod sounds like? I'm a guy and don't know that!
Take the car to a mechanic. Call around for one that will do a free diagnosis. Good luck.
