Hi, I am a Speech major and like it so far. I think I like the medical stuff the most (i.e. hospitals), but the thing is I'm in a wheelchair so I'm thinking it might be hard to do stuff like feeding swallowing patients.

Any advice from SLPs on what working in hospitals and elsewhere is like? What is the setting that you like the most?

My sister has a job interview today at a Homeless Shelter as an assistant to the Volunteer Coordinator. She is also someone who 5 years ago was near homeless herself and struggling with an addicition to alcohol.....she has been sober 5 years and her life has completely changed around. She is not the same person she was. She is in a social work program at the local college and wants to devote her life to social service. Should she reveal her past during the job interview?

I live extremely close to the Blue Water Bridge, and traveling across the bridge to Canada to work would be very easy. As long as Canadians can work here in the USA, we as Americans can work there? How do I find out?

and I need to quit my other job before i can start this one. I'm only 16 and am working at a shoe store and am switching over to a sports store, which much better suites my personality, seeing that i want to be a sports writer once i graduate. What should i tell my previous/current employer, and if i want to write a letter of resignation, what should it say? Any suggestions?

My boss of 6 months has never taken any interest in what I do all day with my time which I mostly spend on here. Her desk faces mine and sometimes I wonder what she thinks I'm doing. I'm leaving here on Friday to go back to a job that I really liked so even if she finds out, she can hardly sack me and I won't even need a reference!!!!

I was an applicant for a environmental director position for a native american tribe. I have experience in that field and recently earned a masters degree in environmental policy.

Anyway, After my inital application was submitted, I recieved an email stating that they (the tribe)"are looking forward to discussing further" the opportunity with me. I thanked them and waited - nothing.

Two weeks later, I called the tribal office to ask about the status of the position. The office manager told me that "interviews are being scheduled, and - just between you and me - I am looking at your application right now and it looks like they (the tribal adminsitration) are going to offer you an interview. Expect a phone call in the next few days" Again, I waited, again - nothing.

Now (about two weeks later) I find out that the position is filled. I was never contacted. What, if anything, did I do wrong here? What should I have done differently? Or, is this just the way things work?

I was arrested for a minor marijuana (minor misdemenor) charge on my 19th birthday (7 years ago) at my undergradute university. The charge was lessened to "disorderly conduct" and then EXPUNGED a year later. Now I am graduating with a masters degree, have kept a clean record, and am applying for competitive jobs.

Even though my record is "clean", I have decided that I will disclose the arrest on job appications, for the sake of honesty, but I'd much rather stick to 'disorderly conduct' as opposed to "possession of marijuana".

Since I was arrested for possession, but charged with DC, can the employer somehow review the arrest record? The jobs I am applying for require a pre-employment drug screening (which I can pass) and I dont want my application to be discarded because I have a "drug" arrest, but not a "drug" charge.

As a side note, my ability to get federal student financial aid was unafffected by the arrest, meaning it is NOT a "drug charge"

Is it appropriate to have a husband &wife to work together in the same company, office and room, sits just few desk apart from each other. They call themselves Senior manager and Manager of the department. The department has only less than 5 staff under them. We find it difficult to work something as the husband and wife sometimes gives different instructions. Both will justified themselves to go for seminars, workshops, courses and even overseas conferences together. If both goes on leave the staff will be given projects to keep us occupy . Our senior management allows them as both job scope & field of expertise are similar. Sometime we feel awkward, when both speak other language.

Our HQ HR does not know of this arrangement, our present HR representive does not bother as both are high performance couples who can boost the bottomline.

Is this a healthy office practice? Any guidelines for reference? . Any ideas as how this information can be transferred across to the HQ HR?
