I am with Seja on this one. Though it is hard to fill some jobs, there are a lot more candidates out there who do not sell themselves up enough to attract the positions.
With so many people applying for some jobs, it is really hard to choose shortlists for interviews, and sometimes the smallest of things can put employers off
Say you are applying for a position that requires Attention to detail, and you make a speeling error on your application. What does that say about your attention to detail compared to the thousands of perfectly spelled CVs?
Say you are applying for a position as a typist, and the require experience in computing, but you have no visible signs of using computers in your CV's.
Say they need someone who can use Excel Spreadsheets, but you do not mention this in your CV. How does this compare to the people who add the the line:
Highly proficient in MS Office including Word, Excell and Access.

Yes, at the moment I've been working as a dinner lady in my daughter's school, BUT, they only need me when someone phones in sick and I feel like i'm being used. Ideally i want a job in term time so i can be off when she is, because i can't get childcare and it's too expensive. Or failing that a 10 hour job over 3 days would surfice, but it's very hard to find such a job. People might think i'm being lazy, but when you have a young daughter with know-one to look after her, it's hard.

i was made redundant in 2005 and coincidentally discovered i was pregnant during that time. Anyway when my daughter was 8 months i decided to start trying to look for work again but found it impossible, couldt get interviews. Its odd because when i was working , recruitment agaents would call me all the time with job opportunities. Now i couldnt even get them to return MY calls!!
The other issue is that i am trying to change career. I used to work in the Press Office but I am now trying to move into the legal field - I achieved my postgrad diploma in law in 2005 too - but this has not been enough to secure work in the field.

No, but as a recruiter there are some jobs I have problems filling. I can also tell you the most common reasons why people aren't successful if you're interested.

Yes! I can't provide all the hours that other ppl can due to abrupt college hours bang in the middle of day. Also they are mainly looking for people with retail experience, but you've got to start somewhere so... what can you do you know what I mean?!

This is a list of the interviews I have been to in the last 12 Months trying to find a role into media sales. Initially I tried recruitment with about 3 companies decided it wasn’t for me and went for media from my work experience. Throughout the job hunt this is what I came across with the companies listed below. Maybe if you’re trying to find a job with these companies then this might help to prepare or give you the perception of the company before sending of your CV somewhere. Add to it you like from experience maybe it will make people and companies think of where they are going wrong and how they waste peoples time.
1. Computer People (Never Heard from them again)
2. Eurobase Ltd (Racist Manager asking my religion and cast and if I had a girlfriend)
3. Haymarket Ltd (Not sales driven enough Duh I came for sales you idiot
4. IT Job Board (Rude Director threw somebody out at the interview, go to any job site they have over 30 vacancies on each job people are dropping out like flies in this place)
5. Wright Recruitment (Personality not good enough for HR recruitment)
6. Spencer Harrington (Chatted rubbish of potential openings never heard from them ever again)
7. TK-Maxx (not that good for our role)
8. Pathway IT (said IT recruitment was not for me asked me why I didn’t go for something else duh why I am at your interview)
9. Mimo Associates (Got me one interview more like trying to earn commission from IT job Boards)
10. Drummond Recruitment (Chatted more rubbish about media sales got me one interview 1+ Point)
11. Reed Business Information (Job was rubbish but made it out to be something large never heard back from them at all)
12. Telegraph Media Group (Can’t handle problems if placed in our role yeh right)
12. Greenlight (Someone matched our criteria better than you)
13. Hays (this was one of the worst interviews ever the interview guys was some)
14. Times Group (No good for our role same as what I was doing before)
15. Shribman (More rubbish from recruitment consultants as usual)
16. Touch Local (No feedback what so ever the manager was a **** seemed like that someone that didn’t care)
17. The Guardian (This is a good one I apply direct to the company the media exchange gets the CV calls me up says come see us before we send you to the guardian, traveled all the way from Luton at £28 the lady was rude flagged me off in 10min and said to me leave no sort ‘oh we will help you find another job’ I also phoned the Gurdian people who had some muppet on the phone talking posh, was told someone would get back to me they never after numerous phone calls then you wonder why they one of top leading papers and heritage and all the other stuff behind their fabulous brand image)
18. PFJ (so called professionals at finding graduates jobs my ***. Turn up as usual to see a recruitment consultant this is after I just finished university. Asks me questions then say oh we can’t help you come back to me when you have 6months telesales experience. Duh thought you wanted graduates who never even have selling experience)
19. Michael Page (Done the phone interview fair enough didn’t pass it. Then I get an email asking how our recruitment process went and also what you think of the recruitment job market what do you think I put?)
20. Austin Benn (this place is more like company full of people who put on a show. I turned up for an interview with the agency said they will get back to me with positions yeh right phoned back got ignored. Emailed said the person I was dealing with is leaving)
21. EMAP (A role for selling into a baby magazines was told I don’t have enough passion to sell into a baby magazine)
22. Media exchange (2nd call from another recruitment consultant guess what I did a boo boo I applied direct to a company and these guys picked it up again sorry oh I’m so sorry can’t believe I made the same mistake again how stupid of me)
23. Enterprise Rent A Car (All the way up north in some town race horse town done the interview never heard from then until I complained and said oh sorry you do have enough customer service experience, ‘by the way this was a graduate role’
24. Venn Group (original manager didn’t see me someone else, starts telling me about the job how long we work up until 9pm and we only earn 25K a year didn’t even bother really telling me about the good things more like all the negatives how bullshit is that)
25. Careerbuilder.co.uk (Start off with the interview with nice lady, then her manager a fat American walks in starts with all the negative talk about making 100 calls per day I don’t think you can handle that blah blah)
26. Edward Jones (very dodgy company I’d be very careful in applying here I passed their online test but then they ask for a hell of a lot of information with regard to financial information like as if your applying for a mortgage.
