and I need to quit my other job before i can start this one. I'm only 16 and am working at a shoe store and am switching over to a sports store, which much better suites my personality, seeing that i want to be a sports writer once i graduate. What should i tell my previous/current employer, and if i want to write a letter of resignation, what should it say? Any suggestions?

at 16 a letter is not needed. Just tell your boss that you have enjoyed working for him but you found something else you would rather be doing. You should give them 2 weeks notice but depending on the place they may not need you to fullfill that.

You should still give them a letter (Practice for when you get older). Tell them that although you have enjoyed working for them, that you have found another job that goes along with your future career plans. Do give two weeks notice, because that way if things don't work out at your new job they would be more likely to hire you back.

I agree with the "DR". They really just want you to be honest. If you are in good standing with them, you have nothing to worry about. Just tell them you got an offer you couldn't refuse. Sometimes if you are giving notice, you will actually get another offer, meaning with the place you are currently working for. No letter is needed for something this simple. Good luck.
