I guess it depends on how you like getting hung up on, and how pushy you are. Unless you can meet the weekly or monthly quota you will not be a telemarketer for long. My step-son was working at a place for a month and was let go because he didn't meet his, and he is good at sales.

I work in a call center and I love it. We don't do telemarketing. We take orders by phone from customers that call in. We get calls from all over the world, so it is very interesting and fun to talk to people and hear about their weather,etc.

I'm a good salesman, but I could never do it. I find telemarketing to be rude and intrusive. It's the main reason I got caller ID, so that I don't even have talk to the telemarketers anymore.

As the recipient of unsolicited commercial calls, I've developed a negative attitude toward the practice. Thanks to caller ID I can see who's calling repeatedly and who's only calling sporadically. Unfortunately most of the unsolicited commercial calls I receive are on a daily or twice-per-day basis. I don't like it when people nag, and I have the same opinion about computer-generated nagging calls. Also, there's a five second delay between when I say "hello" and when someone on the other end greets me. This reflects an impersonal attitude toward me as a potential customer. Another negative is that the sales people are trained not to let you say a word unless it's, "Yes," or your personal information. It's disturbing to hear someone respond to my "no" with "I sure can appreciate that, but..." No, you aren't appreciating my "no"; you're ignoring it. That's insensitive and not the way to win customers.
Because of my negative experience with unsolicited commercial calls I will not purchase products or services from companies that engage in this form of impropriety. It's the surest way to lose me as a potential customer.

Ask yourself if you really believe in what these people are attempting to do.
Do you enjoy answering three to five cold calls a day? Almost everyone you'll be talking to will have hung up on the people who called before you got them on the line.
Is any dollar amount worth the hatred this business model creates?
I find that the vast majority of folks don't want to be bothered with cold call sales pitches.
Think that over long and hard before you consider taking a job in that industry.

for someone with no skills, experience, or education, telemarketing can be OK. However, it is a total grind.

I tried it for a week during my summer break in college. I absolutely hated it and quit! I was cussed out, threatened, hung up on, etc constantly. Plus you have to be right pushy to keep trying to sell the stupid stuff when people are telling you no thanks. you sit in a cubicle, stare at a computer screen and talk to people you don't know all day. yuck
