I'm in a pickle with my assistant for the holidays. I've distanced myself with her for the past 3 years because of underhanded remarks made by her by prying into my personal life. According to her I am always making bad choices. For example " Buying and selling our home at the wrong time, using the wrong brand of something, my child isn't a genius like hers, etc. I want to keep my private life private and stick to business, but every year she sends my son a $50 US savings bond and it looks like she is going to do it again since she just asked me for my new address "in case she wants to send something." Obviously she doesn't get the hint and now I feel obligated to give her something at the same value despite I give her a $30.00 gift certificate and cookies for her family. I know she is hurting for money with her husband out of a job. What is the polite way to handle this?

I worked in the insurance business for 12 years and people who called were very mean and difficult

Also what really got me mad and got my back up was the callers that would call the reception desk, some callers would come back to my board 10-15 times harrasing me, belittling me, cursing at me and I was even threatened a couple of times also. These people that called really had a lot of balls or a lot of nerve.

I did my job the best I could and I was not allowed to get away with ANYTHING. But my question is why do people treat the receptionist like the hired help and treat the receptionist like she is stupid? I have NEVER EVER talked to ANYONE in that fashion.

Why are people like this? I can only imagine how they treat thier family and friends.

One caller threatened to bomb my office if he did not get his check and he said there will be no more receptionist left that was the straw that broke the camels back and I went to another postion.

What is your take on this?

We have a female manager and all the girls are going out for a Christmas lunch. Our manager wants to treat as a Christmas to all of us and I suggested we all go in on a gift for our manager. Someone wants to buy her a diamond necklace, but others, including myself, feel diamonds are a bit intimate and personal, not something you'd give to a person you work with/for. What do you all think?

I am inviting people to celebrate my birthday at a fancy restaurant, but my husband is paying for the entire bill. I know a few of my guests will be turned off by the thought of having to pay for such expensive meals, so I want to tastefully mention in the invitation that they won't have to pay. But how can I word that?

It is a pretty formal party that I am going to...I still haven't bought the dress - but I am looking at black velvet or silk - most of what I have looked at have capped or no sleeves... what type of wrap or jacket should I get - this is a Christmas party and it is cold :) there is only so much I am willing to do - all of the dresses are above the knee (brrr) so I need to know if I should get a black velvet wrap to go with the velvet dress? Or should I go OPPOSITE - velvet dress w/silk wrap, or silk dress w/velvet wrap... and - should those wraps also be black?? Or should I pick some other color?
This is my first formal party like this and I want the dress to be nice and have the option of using it later on - hence the LBD :)
- Thanks -

What kind of disorder is it when a man continues to tamper with federal mail, is it some kind of fixation?

When he was a young boy, it started as him scamming an extra ice cream cone at the ice cream place and throwing it into the public blue mailbox - about once a week.

Now, as a grown man, he swiped a stack of important mail from a place because he feels that he was ripped off there, and he is now enjoying looking through all this mail....

How would you even begin to diagnose this behavior?

They approach you, begging for money, and when you don't have any going spare, they hurl abuse at you.

Don't get me wrong, I have given money to homeless people a few times, I gave a man a £10 once.

But christ, the rude ones are awful. Has anyone here had any experiances with a homeless person?

Humans are obviously curious by nature; if you try to show something to them, then they will naturally take a passing look to see what it is that you want us to see, and whether it is worth seeing in the first place. When a girl wears a Vee cut top that splits down to almost her belly button, does she really expect people to stare into her eyes?

Certainly she must realize that everyone is thinking “bimbo” whenever she acts offended that she got the result that the clothing designer was apparently aiming for.

Don’t give me any nonsense about how a “gentleman” wouldn’t look. If that is true, then a “lady” wouldn’t show. It is silly to say that women dress sexy just for themselves; obviously other people see you, and you apparently realize that other people are reacting in some way to what you have on, because you are self-conscious about it. Don’t waste time blaming the victims of your exhibitionism unless you are too retarded to understand cause and effect.

One of my great aunts used to be a caterer and is a very good cook. However, she refuses to give out any of her recipes to ANYONE. At a baby shower this past weekend, she declared (as she does at just about any function whenever anyone says they like what she's made) that no one will get her recipes until the day she dies. And when she says no one, she means NO ONE.

I know they're her recipes and she can do what she wants with them, but I just found it a little rude. I've always taken wanting to exchange recipes as a pretty high compliment. Even if I did have a recipe that I wanted to keep secret, I'd at least let my family in on it! I can totally understand not exactly wanting friends and other visitors in on some things, but FAMILY???

What are your thoughts on this?
