It is a pretty formal party that I am going to...I still haven't bought the dress - but I am looking at black velvet or silk - most of what I have looked at have capped or no sleeves... what type of wrap or jacket should I get - this is a Christmas party and it is cold :) there is only so much I am willing to do - all of the dresses are above the knee (brrr) so I need to know if I should get a black velvet wrap to go with the velvet dress? Or should I go OPPOSITE - velvet dress w/silk wrap, or silk dress w/velvet wrap... and - should those wraps also be black?? Or should I pick some other color?
This is my first formal party like this and I want the dress to be nice and have the option of using it later on - hence the LBD :)
- Thanks -

Any color! That's the great thing about the "little black dress" - you can match pretty much any color with it. You can go with a classy black sillk or velvet wrap, or a brightly colored pink silk wrap to make the black silk dress festive, or whatever.

Keep in mind that you will probably be indoors most of the time, and will only be outside while running to and from the car (where you can crank up the heat and bring a lap robe). So dress for the indoors. I'd suggest a lighter wrap that you can use to accentuate your outfit and keep on all night, instead of a heavier cover-up that conceals your outfit.

Black velvet dress with a silk wrap. I would go with a print or possibly a metallic color. The velvet will keep you warn and the wrap will add some sass!

If you decide on a wrap or shawl of some type, though pretty, you may be playing with it all night to keep it on. Why not look for a dress that either has long sleeves or has a jacket with it? But if you go with the sleeveless, find a colorful short jacket with sequins that will add zip to your look. Then you cold also have some fun with your shoe choice.

For the gift: Silver wrapping paper with a solid color ribbon is classy. Think red or something. You should also get the ribbon that has wire inside to create a nice "stable" look.

You don't necessarily have to match your outfit with the gift. Get whatever dress you like and find whatever wrapping paper looks good.

If you over-think it, it would just look like you're trying too hard and it would be obvious to other people that this was your first time. Classy, minimalist and not too careful goes a long way.

Find a wrap for that time of year, either black or light neutral color will work, beige, light brown, white would work but is a pain to keep clean. You could go with cloth if it had a fur like collar. A heavy cape would work if it were black and was elegant. A cape could also be bright red.

Choose a colour that looks great on you. Once you settle on your dress it will be easier to choose the wrap. A pashmina is a good safe option though don't be limited by safe.

particular, why no longer? All 3 of those colours are neutrals. you're able to desire to positioned on brown makeup with a brown gown and it could be wonderful. slightly too matchy-matchy, yet no longer something poor. I think I'd use a pashmina-type wrap in red, assuming that everything else (shoes, nylons, dress) are black.
