Sometimes in an overheated arguement, the truth becomes unimportant and the important thing becomes, outdoing the other. I find it best if both parties can calm down, take a time out, refocus on what the disagreement is all about, and seeking the truth when heads are calm and reasonable.

You can't win. The overheated party (or parties) won't listen to any rationale. The only real way to win is take a break until both parties calm down and resume the DISAGREEMENT when you can both be clear and level headed about the subject.

"Overheated" typically indicates a level of disrespect between the parties, which may include yelling, profanities or insults.
To "win" this type of argument, you've got to keep your emotions in check and focus on the facts. If you are able to convey the facts indisputably in a clear & concise manner, you've won.

It's not about who is "right', or who will "win". If there is a "winner", there will also be a "loser".
Grow up-- it's about being an adult and respecting the other person's view, even if it is different than yours.
If you are "overheated", excuse yourself for a while until you "cool off".

Walk away. The other person is then left arguing with him- or herself.

indirectly ridicule the person, whilst he or she has reached boiling point. Your killing yourself laughing inside, then show as much concern as possible. leaving yourself calm, stress free and the other person is still fuming inside.
