I walk my daughter to school every day. I do appreciate though, that there are some parents for whom that just isn't practical -but still, they don't all need to turn into Rutger Hauer in the Hitcher while they're doing it.
The worst drivers I've ever seen are parents on the school run.
My daughter's school has a "Walk to School" week once a month, and all parents are encouraged to leave their cars at home, or at the very least join a carpool. The kids who do walk get badges and points for their group, so it encourages the kids to do the whole emotional blackmail thing with the parents - which in this case is a pretty good idea!

I do agree with you and as a mother of 2 both school age, I am also appalled at the way some parents park when picking up or dropping off children. I know many who live within minutes of the school yet they still use their cars!!! I do use my car as we live several miles away but i park well away from the school and take a 5 minute walk down to fetch my son. Although there have been many complaints, still nothing is done. I reckon it will take something to happen before any action is taken, "Sad" I know but fact.

Not everyone, and indeed most parents, don't have the luxury of an afternoon stroll with the kids. Most of those parents picking their kids up are on their way home from work, or on their way to drop the kids at the sitter and go TO work, or are off to another activity (sports, scouts, music lessons, etc.) For many other parents, they would have to cross busy intersections, sometimes even main streets though congested traffic to get home, and walking would be too dangerous. Try to recognize that not everyone has the same options that you do.

I believe its time to bring back the school bus!
Parents however are terrified to let little Johnny and Susie out of their sight for fear of the pedophiles that walk the streets. The press and media make so much of every event that it appears as if every single child is at risk.
Unfortunately children can't live normal lives because of the above so till we can teleport children to and from school we are stuck with school runs.

When I was a wee lassie, one of the fun parts o' the day was wandering tae school wi' ma friends. Now it cracks me up tae see mums and dads driving for two minutes tae drop off the kiddies. I realise that the world is a wee bitty scarier than when I wiz wee, but surely, a bunch o' mates hoofin' it tae school is a big fun part o' the day!! Howf the two minute drivers oot, let the kiddies make their way and huv a good gab intae the bargain!!!!

You are lucky that your kids' school is only a mile away and that you can walk there and back. There is nothing more stressful than driving them to school in the London traffic in the mornings and picking them up in the afternoon. Driving in London is no pleasure and I always avoid it when I can. If walking was an option for me, then I would definitely take it. Oh, and my children are not overweight.

well as an example i will use myself. i have 3 kids, one catches the bus to his school the other 2 are driven by myself to school... the reason?? well I have problems walking too far as i have osteoarthritis in my knee, and as soon as i have dropped them off i have to leave as quickly as possible to get to work... am i right to drive them to school or not?
I park considerately not by peoples drives, and try to get there about a minute before school starts so am only parked for 3minutes or so!

Hi, I agree with you.
But the trouble with today's parents is most of them have to or choose to work and it is quicker to drop their kids off and go straight off to work, or they are too scared of letting their children walk, for fear of them being abducted or run over.
I am with you on this one, I have 3 children and we all walk to school, with the exception of the eldest who has to catch a buss as it is too far and we are pretty rural here.
But I have seen mums drive their kids to school who live just as close as I do!!
Just for the record, I do work P/T, so I walk my kids to school, rush back and drive to work.I also enjoy the walk as it gives us time to talk, another thing which is disappearing too!
