GEORGE CARLIN Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - gross and mouthy comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent...and so very appropriate.

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

They were asking too many personal questions, I was nice at first but then it got to the point of them stopping me for 30 mins, asking lots of questions..another neighbour whos married kept saying how he wants to take pics of me, etc.. I managed to avoid them for a year, i avoided the times they came home and left, if i saw them walking out or in the building I would turn the corner and walk back after 5 mins...
Now I have gone back to not avoiding them honestly I was sick of it. They dont ask me personal questions, just hi and I feel like my self respect is back, they are leaving me alone.

did i do the right thing?

Background information: Her boyfriend lives across from me and he is friendly to all and for some strange reason she stole some of my clothing out of the dryer. I have never confronted her. But she just keeps saying things about me. I stay in my apratment away from everyone. It is an awful feeling. Should I ask her why she is telling people awful things about me>

i work for a 95 yr old woman, and every week or so her daughter will stop by and 'take us to lunch'.

It is ALWAYS to pizza hut, and as i dont like pizza to begin with, she always throws crude comments to me if i start to decline "Oh I see, trying to watch your figure" "Youre on a diet then?" etc etc (By the way, shes about 5'5 and 180lbs, I'm 5'7 and 110 but i dont 'diet')

Anyways.. if i have to sit down to one more ham & cheese pizza i'm going to scream. My stomach does not do well with fast food, and i hardly ever eat it. At first i was being nice, but i really just cant handle it.

What is a polite way to say that I would rather stay at home to clean or read while she takes her mother to lunch?

I cant use the 'oh i think you should spend more time together' cause she doesnt even talk to her mom when we go out. She refuses to go anywhere else either because 'its moms favorite restaurant'.

She is very stubborn, so i'll probably need a rebuttal or two if you have em.

I am a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding and I have taken on half the planning of the Bridal Shower to help out the Maid of Honor. She has kids and didn't have the time or money to host the event solo. I am (fairly) recently out of college and make just enough money to get by. My question is: Do I need to buy the bride a shower present if I am already spending a lot on the shower itself? It's not that I don't want to get her anything, but I will be paying for so many things that I'm worried about my finances. I have to pay for a bridesmaid dress, shoes, wedding present, and will have to take off work and travel for the wedding itself. Should I get her something anyway, or consider the party her present?

When I was growing up I was always told that if you are a nice person that people would respect and like you. I was told always to be on time for work, school, and any other function. There is this woman at work and she is rude. I mean horrible. She never shows up for work on time and she punches some of the staff in the back like she was playing. Everyone seems to like her though. What the $%$%? Her and the boss get along good. The boss always seems to overlook it when this woman doesn't do her work right or in most cases not at all. Am I looking to much into something or is this just a case of where I work being *** backwards? This woman accused me of trying to be perfect the other day because I do my work right. Any advice?

Is it wrong to have my daughter sell candy to raise money for her own birthday party?

I was thinking about buying her fundraiser candy boxes to sell so she an make $ for her birthday party. Her dad and I both work, but we are short on $. Neither of us have a c/c and that's not a good route to go anyway.

So I was wondering. Is it illegal to do so? What would be the proper etiquette if someone asks why she's selling it?

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal. I heard someone say that they use to sell candy when they were young to earn $ for their own toys.

What to do?

Any other ideas on how to raise $ for her party are welcome. Her party I want to give her will cost about $200. Of course if things don't work out I know we'll have to settle for whatever we can afford.

Also her birthday isn't until end of Dec. We might have party end Nov though.

Please no rude comments though

I've asked about the sense of entitlement kids have today and I see it in this place often in the blatant form of questions such as:

"How can I get a NEW car with no money?"

"Where can I get music and movies for free?"

"Where can I get a job starting at $50,000 a year without college?"

"How can I get a degree without going to school?"

I've also heard more than one 20 year old intern at work whine that they shouldn't have to work late since they've already graduated and have "paid their dues".

I think we all wanted stuff we didn't earn at some point but we never actually EXPECTED it. They really seek things they don't deserve now as if it's owed to them without any regard to the logistics or consequences of where it comes from. Some of these people are getting into their 20's and not seeing the light. Had you heard anyone back in "our day" actually ask any of these questions with a straight face, wouldn't you have thought they we're mentally ill on on drugs?

For those who don't know me, My boyfriend and I are working on a development of a children computer program, so we need now just 50 words staring with the letter E appropriate for kids under the age of 5 to 6 years old. I now that looking up in a dictionary will be the best way to search for them, but I really don't have a lot of time in my hands since my uncle died yesterday and I work full time and at night I went to college is pretty hard to seek for this words.

I was wondering what people of all ages, young and old, think of bodypiercings when it comes to the workplace? In my opinion I think they are ok providing there not everywhere. But where does one " draw the line " so to speak ? . Do you think they are inapropriate ? I think it should be up to the employer's discreation to decide what's approprite and what is'nt. I also think that employers are way to tough on personel presentation. Our society has changed and it stil is changing and we should all stop worrying about how people look and be more conserned about how well we do our job !

I hate it when I'm at work and people (usually older people, fifty and above) grab you to get your attention. I dont mind being touched on a shoulder or something, but when people grab your upper arm and cling to you, digging their nails in its extreamly threatening (especially as I am polite and hate to cause confontations), especially when they wont let go!

its been done before, but here's my list...
1) yes, we provide restrooms for you and you have the right to use the restrooms. but out of respect for associates and other customers, don't treat the restrooms like your own personal bathroom. i hate when a) customers do not flush toilets (that's not in my job description) or b) make an unimaginable mess in the stalls (go to your own home if you are having those issues).

2) if you open merchandise up and decide you don't want it, return it to the cashier and they will repackage or do it yourself. leaving it on the floor or shoved somewhere else only causes problems (damaged merchandise, false theft logs).

3) i apologize if we do not carry the product you are looking for, but don't stare at me expecting me to make it magically appear.

4) don't threaten me with "i'm just going to shop at ____ from now on," and expect it to scare me. i really don't care. this job isn't my life and i will not lose sleep if i never see you again.

My boyfriend always has his cell phone and bluetooth on him, even on vacations. The phone isn't for business use. He constantly takes calls from his friends during vacation to discuss normal stuff like Halo 2 or who's the most underrated rookie in the NFL. I think it interrupts our vacation since he zones out when he receives calls and slows down our group.

Almost every vacation picture he's in has his bluetooth in it (I remembered to ask him to put it in his pocket for the other pics). I ask him to call his friends in the hotel when we have down time but he says stuff like "This is what technology is for. It's no big deal."

Are the phone calls excessive for a vacation?

Is having your bluetooth (it's a big one!) in vacation pics tacky?

okay so, I'm getting marriend in october and no one in my family has offered to throw a bachlorett party for me. I have three really close girl cousins that I love and we all say we are sisters but none of them have stepped up to the plate. So today I called one of them and said hey I want to have a bachlorette party do you think you could organize it and I'll pay for everything? she was like for sure. Don't worry about it. I'll do it. when I was asking her this I wanted to cry because I was so hurt that I even had to ask. anyways what would you think if I asked you that? Would you be mad? hurt? what?

I'm getting laser hair removal treatments and I was wondering... should I tip the person that does the actual treatment? It sort of seems like a cross between a doctor's visit (where you generally wouldn't tip the doctor or nurse) and a spa treatment (where you definitely would tip the person). The people that do it are actual nurses. Also, each treatment is like $130 or so, so if I wanted to tip 15%, it would be like $20!! But I don't want to be rude or do the wrong thing..

My AP U.S. history teacher is very liberal. She talks highly of and pushes belief on points that I don't agree with at all. Should I speak up and risk a bad grade/ bad reputation (of being a person who looks for trouble) or should I just write what she wants to hear? It hurts to stay silent, but i know that i have to pick my battles. Help Me! This isn't about the right or the left...answer on what you would do in this situation regarding your personal beliefs...
