are you a woman? if so, my feeling is that her boyfriend who lives across the hall made a remark about you (especially if you are attractive)...and, she is jealous of you.
I wouldnt confront her...just let it go...and, she will move on eventually, or perhaps you should look for another place to live..
best of luck

I would confront her. But you have to time it right and you have to remain cool, calm, and collected. First wait until she is with the manager or other people she has talked crap to. Walk up to her calmly, be cool and don't show a hint of nervousness, and next lay it all on the line. Don't raise your voice or act mad. Stay calm and say "so i hear you been saying....." . Don't curse or make insults. After she has given you her excuses or came clean end you conversation with something like. "thanks for sharing with me but in the future I'd rather you don't mention my name to anyone, we are not friends and never will be you have no reason to talk about me". Then calmly walk away and go about your business. But the key is to make sure you call her out in front of those she is talking about you to and to remain calm. If you start cursing and calling her names you'll make yourself look like a ***** and not her. But if you can keep your wits about yourself and firmly put her back in her place trust me in the end she'll be the one who looks stupid.

Well when you keep to yourself, gossip will prevail. Tell her boyfriend what articles of clothing are missing and see if he can get them back for you. Be friendly towards the manager, talk to him/ her everyday and when people see your just a quiet person they will ignore her stupid mouth.

I would just ignore her. Not everyone will believe her gossip. If they are curious enough they will say hi to you and find out those lies are, well, lies.
And next time do NOT leave your clothes unattended!

If you have enough evidence of her telling lies you must confront her and find out what is her problem with you.
Take a friend if necessary

If you think what she's doing is harming your reputation and could affect your ability to get your lease renewed or stay in the apartment building, you could take her to court for libel.
Try to get the manager and others to sign something or testify for you.
Good luck. :)

well you can play in to her drama she is trying to create. If your bored , or ingore her. I am not sure what you have to prove to people you don't talk to. Who cares if she says bad things. You pay your rent. Mind your own business.
