its been done before, but here's my list...
1) yes, we provide restrooms for you and you have the right to use the restrooms. but out of respect for associates and other customers, don't treat the restrooms like your own personal bathroom. i hate when a) customers do not flush toilets (that's not in my job description) or b) make an unimaginable mess in the stalls (go to your own home if you are having those issues).
2) if you open merchandise up and decide you don't want it, return it to the cashier and they will repackage or do it yourself. leaving it on the floor or shoved somewhere else only causes problems (damaged merchandise, false theft logs).
3) i apologize if we do not carry the product you are looking for, but don't stare at me expecting me to make it magically appear.
4) don't threaten me with "i'm just going to shop at ____ from now on," and expect it to scare me. i really don't care. this job isn't my life and i will not lose sleep if i never see you again.

5) i know you hate it (and i do too), but i have to ask, "would you like to save 15% off your purchse today by signing up for a charge card?" just politely say no and there will be no further questions.
6) if i'm helping another customer, do not interrupt. i've heard people talk about this before i worked retail and i never imagined that people actually throught they were that important. but people actually do step between me and other customers and expect me to wait on them instantly.
7) i know what sales are going on, i know how to ring up items, i know where product is located in the store. don't tell me how to do my job unless you want to jump over the counter and help nasty people for a little more than minimum wage.
8) don't use checks. it really is like those commercials...it holds everything up. also, i will need your phone # to process your check. it's for security reasons and i will not accept your check without one.
wow, what a list. what annoys you?

In response to the person about the $240 jeans, if someone earns enough money to spend that kind of dough, you would think they would also have enough manners to refrain from making a "mess" in public. This is proof that Neanderthal behavior does not improve with higher salaries.

Yes, I agree with you - that is bad behavior.
However, there are things about the salesperson that annoy me too, as a customer.
If I tell you (the salesperson) I am just looking, then please let me do that and not follow me around and try to pressure me into buying something.
If I need help and I am waiting patiently, please do not go running around (pretending you're busy, when you are not) to avoid helping me or help someone else who came after me.
If ask for information about your products and you don't know, please say so rather than give incorrect information and if possible, please try to find out the correct information.
If you don't have the product in stock and you say you will get it for me, please don't make false promises if you won't be able to get it and also false promises about when you will actually receive the product. Honesty really is the best policy in this case.
It stands to reason, if the customer receives consistently bad service, he will shop elsewhere. It's true that the job is not your life, but if the person in charge (manager/owner) sees enough customers disappearing and it is due to a particular salesperson's bad attitude, well do you think it's possible that person may be fired from his job?
I think the main thing between salesperson and customer should be a pleasant attitude consisting of goodwill and helpfulness. Both are human beings and must be treated with respect and consideration.

Sounds to me like you have had a lot of bad experience's with customers. I work in retail also and unfortunately putting up with rude customers is part of it. There are alot of people out there that are really rude while shopping but then again there are just as many customers that are as friendly as can be. You have to let the good customers make up for the bad ones and go on with your job.
"Glinda" is one I would never want to have to deal with. I don't care if you are buying a pair of 240 dollar jeans that in no way means some one should have to clean up after you. Obviously you have never worked in retail and probably never will. Retail is a very hard job its not just about standing at a cash register ringing up sales there is alot more to it.

Retail is hellish, isn't it? There is no solution for the restroom situation or the packaging issues, but try this for # 3 and #4.
When someone stares at you as if expecting you to make a product magically appear, get out a stuffed white rabbit and brandish it, while saying in an apologetic tone, "I'm sorry, this is the only thing I can pull out of a hat today."
When people say in a menacing tone that they're going to shop at such and such from now on, flash them your brightest smile and say "You go on ahead and do that now, honey, and have a wonderful time over there! We'll really miss you."
LOL. You have to have a sense of humor to make it in retail. Good luck, and God bless.

Customers suck...well, only about 5% but those are the ones you remember. I've been in retail for a long, long time. You learn to laugh a lot of it off over time. And someday youll have a lot of funny stories to tell. Last week someone pooped in the garbage can at work then replace the bag. You cant make that kind of stuff up.

ahh somewhere i feel at home..... I know exactly what you are talkign about!!! I have worked in retail for almost 9 years now.. sad i know.. but it pays my bills... anyhow I work at a store kind of like walmart (but of course much better :))
I love the whole "im going to shop at (usually ) walmart".... okay go ahead... or since we jsut (lke 6 months ago) had a super walmart open up in town making them our main compeditor.....
they do the whole "oh is walmart taking your sales"... "im just gonna shop at walmart" or previous to walmart we had a few irate people who were just so very sure tha walmart was so much better that when they opened we would lose soo much money and no one would come to our store and walmart was soo much cheaper.... and its those same peopl whostill shop with us.... and btw... walmart is actually doing worse in our area then projected and we are doing better than projected so HAH stupid people!
I also hate "this was supposed to be on sale... this happens every time i come here... they need to make the signs more clear bal bla"
first... it is in the paper .. "you have the wrong size mam, its the 20 oz box of coco puffs, not the 16 oz box"
"well the sign doesnt specify... its in front of all of them"
so then i call the grocery department "yea the sign does specify in plain english it is the 20 oz size"
"ok mam, the guy in grocery read the sign and it does specify"
then they get all pisy and crap and complain we need to make our signs bette.. well,,, if you did read the sign then you would know... its funny i never have a problem reading the signs
Then theres the people with the screaming kids who want everything gawd... give them a damn apple and shut them up.. they dont need a toy and candy and a donut....
oh and then we have self scan check outs.. those are interesting
i sometimes wonder how people function in every day life....
people will scan say a bottle return slip (i live in michigan we ahve deposit on pop/ soda bottles) so they will scan a bottle slip and it will both tell you and have it shopwing on the screen "please take your bottle slips to the cashier"....... so they stand there looking at the screen. looking at the cashier etc... and just stand there and then get mad becuase "its not working"... hello... are you both deaf and illiterate????
Then the people who dont have a clue what they are doing (it works on a scale system.. everything you scan you put in the bag then scan your next uitem.. if you take sumthing off or move it or dont put it in the bag then it trows it off and you have figure out what they scanned what they didnt etc) they will always blame it on the "stupid thing" that doesnt work right and this and that.. and they are so impatient.. they seem to think that you need to help them withing .5 seconds of whent he problem occurs or get all bent out of shape... nevermind that you are overseeing between 6 and ten lanes yourself.... and then when you try to help them and show them the proper way of doing it.. they get all offended like you are calling them stupid without actually saying it..... some actually do say such things.......
then there are the people who want to buy alcohol without an ID... sorry you dont have an ID.. i dont care if youre 24.. you look under 30 i need ID.... or they dont have proper ID and throw a fit... or the ones who hand their freind money and then get all mad and want to talk to a manager when i deny selling it to any of them... and the manager tells them the same thing.. sorry i dont want to lose my job just because you want to drink away your parents money that they thought they were sending you to school with ... dont they know its a party school.. come on now...
there is sooo much more......

This is what annoys me, when customers start to panic when they see that i'm not behind the counter the entire time i'm on the clock. They just freak. I'm not behind there the entire time because no one is there. I go and make the aisle near me look nice. I try to keep busy or my manager will yell at me.
And i agree with you about people who interrupt. It happens all the time. I have to run many things when i'm in the back, and they'll ask for lotto when i'm helping someone with the movies. AH!!

I hate when customers have to grab their bags right away and can't wait two seconds for me to turn the rack. So instead they just give me bruises when I'm trying to put things in the bag

wow this is my second favorite topic i've seen on yahoo. i totally agree, customers are stupid and rude think they know whats going on half the time. i will tell you i HATE customers i've been in situations where i almost blew up becuase customers just have the blackest hearts.
there was one woman who was already mad at me when she called and asked about a special pizza deal, she told me i didnt know how to do my job when she had JUST asked me a question and didnt give me a chance to answer.
i dont quite understand why they have the right to blow steam but employees can't thats just like saying employees are not human, we have feelings too

one more to add..
when customers bring a gazzillion things to the counter and there is a long line behind them and at the counter they are deciding whether they want to buy it or leave it rite there holding people up and filling up the register space with useless stuff that later the sales associate will have to put back.
