Beats me Bex. I'm a nurse and not long ago one of my nursing collegues chid me for saying "please" when giving patients mediction to swallow. "Don't beg them" she told me. I was rather stunned, and couldn't disagree more with the view that there is something demeaning about saying please! To me, the truest way to show self respect is to treat others with respect, and that includes saying please and thank you to EVERYONE.

I agree i hate it when my boys open doors for people and they just walk in without saying thank u or how nice of u too hold open the door for me. my son even went as far as handing a woman a cart in the pouring rain so she wouldnt have to go get it and she grabbed it from my son and said well at least u could of done was dry it off now i have a wet cart and no where to put my purse, it made my son cry and i went to her and said u know there are manners out there and u better go find yours and dont u ever talk to my child like that again. and pushed her cart back out in the rain and said now u go get it and see how dry u can make it. people are raised with manners but they choose to act like morons and dont bother to say anything nice about anyone else...by the way thank u for the question and have anice day...

People today or very rude and judge mental to others. Take this if a person walking down the street has a few extra pounds. Humans judge this person as fat lazy and a over eater. When 58% of humans today who are obease or not overeaters they are health problems. We have glands that cause this. People who are rude and can't say please have no manners and were raised to have none.

I agree with you.

I think saying "please" and "thank you" is a sign of respect, consideration and thoughtfulness to other people. It shows kindness and goodwill towards our fellow human beings. I think it's important and a necessity and not something that is silly, uncool, artificial.

It's true that people think they are entitled or too busy, but when something is important, you should take the time to say/do whatever is the polite, right, mannerly way.

Have a nice day!

"Please" stop using excessive punctuation, as it makes it harder to read the question. People are much busier these days than they were a couple decades ago. I think you already know the answer, as it sounds rhetorical to me. Sure, people should say it, but maybe they have issues, like someone close to them died. Plus, a lot of people say it, so "please" don't think that loads of people have bad manners based on a couple observations. Or maybe you really have made numerous observations on the same person on different days, so they either have bad manners or they have permanent-bad-day syndrome.

I think people are just de-evolving these days. I work in retail and if I hear one person say thank you, or please in the course of a week, it's an amazing thing. You are not asking too much to hear someone use manners. All you can do is try not to de-evolve yourself.

In short, pride: a lack of humility, a lack of training, a sense of entitlement.
