They were asking too many personal questions, I was nice at first but then it got to the point of them stopping me for 30 mins, asking lots of questions..another neighbour whos married kept saying how he wants to take pics of me, etc.. I managed to avoid them for a year, i avoided the times they came home and left, if i saw them walking out or in the building I would turn the corner and walk back after 5 mins...
Now I have gone back to not avoiding them honestly I was sick of it. They dont ask me personal questions, just hi and I feel like my self respect is back, they are leaving me alone.
did i do the right thing?

I drew the line when one neighbour imitated my Mothers voice, (heavy Russian accent) He started talking like her and laughed and ran down the stairs. I saw him the other day, he almost made beleive he didnt see me.

I agree, you played that just right. Personal questions are rude. And without being rude yourself, you let them know that you did not appreciate being questioned like that. The fact that they don't ask you questions anymore proves they got the hint. If they seem to be ignoring you now then that also proves that at first they were just being nosy and would not really have been good friends anyway.

Yes, avoiding an uncomfortable situation is preferable to being unkind.
In truth, if you can, see if you can't move to a different building or neighborhood with nicer people. Your present neighbors sound like real trash.

What difference does it make? You took care of the situation the best way you knew how. The invasive questioning has stopped and now you have your privacy back. You can't go back and change things, so there's no use worrying about it. You weren't rude, those people were.

yes you did the right thing. my mother in law was the same, except she would use any personal information as a weapon at a later stage (I didn't realise this until too late).
I just refer to her now as the 'animal'. my life has been considerably less problematic since i removed the animal from my life :)

yes you did the right thing....I was raised to avoid my neighbors, and, we never had a problem...and, I asked my parents why we keep to ourselves, and my dad replied, if you dont get along with them you are stuck next to them.
I purchased my home about 8 years ago, and was friendly with one neighbor, long story made short, no we dont speak as, too close, and expectations too high.
I just wave hello to my other neighbors, I dont get into their business, dont go to parties, no nothing...just keep to myself, this is the only way I feel we can keep peace.
