A close friend's father passed away a week ago, and there will be a memorial service planned sometime next week. Is it appropriate to send flowers, or is is more appropriate to make a charitable donation? I'm not sure what to do, and would appreciate whatever is suggested.

I have a coworker who is _extremely_ unprofessional; she is openly hostile, and reminds me of a kid on the playground. ("You BETTER be quiet (grumble)", "Talk to the hand!", "Who are you to me?"). It's not just me, but other people seem to have a half-professional, half-not way of dealing with her - that I never learned how to do. We have very different backgrounds. Additionally, she's much younger than I, barely out of high school. I am used to a professional office environment.

This is a part-time, temp job for me, and I just want to avoid any conflict and be reasonably friendly. Any advice on how to deal with her? I'm afraid she thinks I'm "uppity", but really, I'm just naturally very reserved. I've tried to be more open and friendly, but I'm just about at my wit's end.

Thanks for your input.

Be it on a bus, train or building, I have noticed people entering often try to push their way past people exiting. I was trying to get off the subway train, and this woman getting on blocked my exit, saying EXCUSE ME!!, assuming she had the right of way. What do you think- doesn't ettiquite dictate that people waiting to enter should *WAIT* until all people have finished exiting, rather than push by them?

I don't want to hurt anyones feelings, but we are having to cut (for the third time) our guest list. Some of these people probably just assume they are invited and that it is going to be a big wedding. However, we just can't afford to invite as many people as we were hoping because we are paying for everything ourselves (which we've known all along) and the cash just isn't there.

Any suggestions for letting people down easy when they ask where their invitation is?

thanks.

I am going to be attending a service for a co-worker's 18 year old son who I had never met. Many people from the office are going. I am wondering, is it appropriate etiquette for me to bring my significant other with me ? He has not met the co-worker.

We are constantly been thrown into the physical stimulation be on TV, Newspaper, Ads, Interaction, conversation with opposite sex.
It is more than likely than one sees a undertone of sex or lewidness or sensuality from cradle to grave.
Look at TV, Books, Sports, News, Media, Clothing, and so on
If it is not sex or sexy .. then nothing happens.
So the debate is what is beyond sex

First anniversary you give each other paper … then as each year progresses, a bigger gift is given. It seems that today’s commercial environment is compelling us to spend all the money on first dates (strangers) and then as the relationship gets familiar to spend less on gifts. How did this tradition get backwards?

I'm concerned that the person I'm addressing as "m'am" might feel old. However, I don't want to just call someone by her first name especially if it's a formal conversation like a job interview.

Our non profit group recently held a conference at a local high school. They gave us a discounted rate and really went out of their way to make sure we had a great day. We are hoping to give them a small thank you gift but we are all pretty stumped as to what we should get. We are hoping to spend under $75 and would like it to be beneficial to the whole school. Any ideas??

Is this weird-did I overreact?
I said to my girlfriend where she wanted to go for her birthday. She said which restaurant, and I sent her a text saying what time she wanted. She sent a text back saying the time, and so I rang the restaurant to book a table. She then tells me today that she rang the restaurant to check that I had booked the table. Don't like that!

Is that normal, or have I overreacted by saying that surely she could have trusted me to book a table. We're 18, and she lives with her mom. Today, I find out that her mom booked a table ages ago at a more expensive restaurant, with the assumption that I would take her out. However, I told her that I couldn't afford to as I'm only a student! Grr...

Normal?

I'm a college student who really needs some money. Recently, I got a $6.50/hr job offer at my school's library.

I was just about to start working there when this person from another job that pays $8/hr called me to offer me a position. Because I'm work study and very poor, I need as much money as possible.

So, how do I tell the $6.50/hr people that I can't work there anymore without being undiplomatic. They were expecting and excited to see me start working tommorrow.

I was part of a wedding last year and ended up being friends with the other bridesmaid who I have not never met before. Since the bride noticed we clicked, asked if I would like to take this friend out to dinner for her birthday recently. Guest of honor and I showed up at the restaurant and the bride showed up half an hour late. Said she was tied up at her parents and already ate. She just watched us finish our meal. When the check came, she never offered to contribute to her friend's birthday meal. Not to make a fuss, so I paid the entire check. Later I asked her to pay for half of the other friend's meal. Her reasoning for not even offering to pay half was because she didn't eat at the restaurant and brought a gift. Does she have a point? She did arrange the dinner in the first place and it was her friend too.
