I'm a college student who really needs some money. Recently, I got a $6.50/hr job offer at my school's library.
I was just about to start working there when this person from another job that pays $8/hr called me to offer me a position. Because I'm work study and very poor, I need as much money as possible.
So, how do I tell the $6.50/hr people that I can't work there anymore without being undiplomatic. They were expecting and excited to see me start working tommorrow.

Just tell them that you appreciate the fact that they were willing to hire you, but that another job opportunity became available to you and you have decided to accept their offer. Tell them that you are sorry for the short notice.

The grass is not always greener on the other side. Weigh your decision about the two jobs - which one will provide you with ample time to complete school work, which one will be flexible when you need extra time to study for exams or complete a project. Does either of them have higher positions that pay better that you might attain to?
If you still decide to go with the higher paying job, call them or go see them as soon as possible and explain the situation, let them know that you appreciated being offered the job.

Well you could go to the library and being as nice and pleasant as possible, thank them for the wonderful opportunity they presented you and that you are very thankful for their consideration, but another opportunity presented itself to you and you have decided to take a different route. Usually, if you are very pleasant and kind and be sure to thank them for their consideration, all will go well. Just be sure to try to do it in person or even a nice letter. You don't want to burn any bridges incase you would ever need a job there in the future. No need to explain to them what other position you decided to take, just focus mainly on being positive.

The best way to do this is to be honest and straightforward. Call the library today and speak to whoever would have been your supervisor. Tell him or her simply what you've put here, that you are sorry to disappoint them, but that you've just been offered a job that pays more, and you can't afford not to take it. No one's going to blame you for taking more money.

Just tell them that you're very sorry but you received another job offer for more money and that due to your current circustances i.e. starving student, that you have to take that one. I'm sure it's not the first time they've heard it.

If you haven't started, than you can respectfully decline without a reason. If you have started, than you should have a face-to-face conversation.
