This world has enough sheep doing what everyone else in the world is doing. Be an individual and be yourself. Clapping should only be done if you truly have been entertained. Doing what everyone else is doing is just undermining yourself and lying to the people performing. Clapping is a form of opinion. Based on your opinion of the performance you either clap or don't clap.

I usually clap a little even if it wasn't very good, as long as the effort was genuine. Especially for amateurs that counts for a lot too! If I were to be disappointed in a well-known professional entertainer I probably wouldn't clap, fortunately I can't recall that happening, I don't go out to performances that often and when I do I have been pretty sucessful in picking something I liked!

And naturally I clap a lot harder when it's really good. :)

I fake it, whether I was entertained or not. If I am expected to applaud, I "pat" my hands together, to give the appearance of cooperation, but without adding to the noise.

For both reasons, and, importantly, because an effort has been made, and the effort should -- unless the entertainer is Michael Richards -- be positively recognised.

Which is why you hear applause for lousy bar bands, and plays put on by children in junior kindergarten.

Personally I don't applaud unless I really enjoyed something. I don't believe you should lie to save someones feelings. If they find out how you really feel later, then they will know you are a liar!

Probably because it's time to applaud.

honestly, applauds are appropriate for good reasons like after speeches and ceremonys or after someone is talking so if anything it's out of respect

Mostly because I have been entertained, but in some situations I have done so just not to seem rude.
