I was driving in the car yesterday with my 5 1/2 year old daughter when she decided to ask the question "Mommy, how do babies come out of their mommies tummies?". I don't want to brush off the question because I want to be honest, but at the same time there is ~too~ much information that you can give a 5 year old. Where is the line between being honest but not going over her head?

Last year, at my daughter's birthday party it was the typical "force the child to sit down and open present after present" type of opening. I hated it because she really wanted to go and play with her friends and just enjoy being 2.

I don't want to repeat that this year. Ideally, I'd like to have some sort of game where she opens gifts throughout the party and it's fun for the person bringing the gift as well to see if it's theirs she'll open next. But I'm having trouble coming up with anything.

Have any ideas?

If not about a type of game, do you have experience or ideas about how to do the present opening differently?

Thanks!

Its a new program at a center where there are activivties for babies and tots like gymboree. Its a two hour drop off. my child and i would do the mommy and me classes there about a year ago. it was expensive after a while. so we quit and she didnt interact much with other children. now a year later i enroll her in a preschool program, 2 hours once week. But my child cries the whole time. the first two times just half the time and now it has been the entire time. they have other levels of child play where the parent is there and all these classes are at aged organized(she loves), i was thinking of dropping the preschool because i dont think she is ready, but enrolling her in another mommy and me type class, but she gets to interact with others while i am there. maybe next year try the preschool one out again. Also i want to work on the seperation anxiety thing. shes with me all the time. i rarely leave her with anyone for a couple of hours, so we can work on that. what do you think?

I am 17 weeks along with my first child, my boyfriends second. I havent been getting any sleep. I have to move to a completely different room half way through the night because my boyfriend snores to loud. The other bed is uncomfortable. I am irratable because I cant get enough sleep. Plus I have been having cramping that makes me sick to my stomache. To put on top of that I feel like all I do is clean. Then when I remind him and his son to pick up after themselves he flips a lid. I mean I am not a maid. All I want them to do is help keep it clean. What should I do?

Okay. My son just recently turned 11 months old. He's starting to develop a little attitude and is unecessarily attached to my hip. I can't even get dressed in the morning without him CONSTANTLY fussing and whining. He's got a ton of toys but he won't play with them. I work during the day, and his sitter says he's just as good as gold with her and spends the entire day playing. Why is it that he can't do that at home? I love him to death and enjoy spending time with him, but I'd like to start just ONE day without him fussing and just ONE morning when I can take and shower and get dressed without him crying. Sometimes I try to ignore it, but I feel like I'm neglecting him. Am I enabling this behavior?? Taking all serious suggestions!!!!!!!!

My daughter is a week away from 14 mths & has started turning her nose up at baby food.

We're introducing more & more tiny bits of table food all the time. She likes cheese, goldfish crackers (& other crackers), yogurt, yogurt drinks, pasta, cut up hamburgers, diced ham, popcorn curls, cut up grapes, bananas, cooked carrots, peas, corn etc. (Also tried scrambled eggs, toast w/jam - not a hit) She eats table food very slowly & much of her food stays on the tray or hits the floor.

Adding to the problem is that with:
1. a small esophagus, (born with it, expected to outgrow by about 18-24 months, makes her gag & cough lots)
2. only 2 bottom front teeth (just through since December & no sign of anymore on the way) &
3. the fact that she's at the VERY bottom of the weight precentile charts at 18lbs 6 oz. (& the pediatrician's reading me the riot act)

I'm worried if I don't keep giving her baby food then she won't eat enough to grow and thrive.

What do I do?
Thanks!

Just curious about other children's daily routines. What time they wake up & their feeding, nap and bed times? I'm a stay at home mom & I just wanted to see how my daughter's schedule differs from others.

I recently started babysitting for a friend of mine and her 5 yr old son is still in diapers and I do not feel comfortable changing him. To me, it is not normal for even a 3 or 4 yr old to be in diapers, let alone a 5 yr old! I could see if maybe he was a special needs child or was autistic or slow or disbled in some way, but the child is perfectly normal and healthy. And he's not even in Pull-ups! S+he has him wearing regular diapers! I don't know what to do....What should I say to my friend becuase I refuse to change a 5 yr old boys' diaper, but I'm afraid she will get mad at me! HELP!

This is a question only for those who actually looked for signs of readiness in their kids, not those who think kids simply have to be out of diapers by certain age.

I have 1 year old twins and they test the limits like most kids. But slapping their hands and giving them a swat on the butt is not being effective. Even if I put toys in front of them instead they will still go back and do what they were told not to do. over and over again. Suggestions please. Kids will not be perfect but I'm afraid if I don't start to break it now then they will be out of control later.

Often times I'm clueless on what to get my 17 month old. Not too many toys hold her attention very long! Do you guys know any toys that my toddler might enjoy at her age? It’s not any type of special occasion I just want to get her something because I haven’t got anything in a while.

Ok, I am a COWARD!!!! I have nursed and co-slept with my wonderful son for a YEAR now! However, he is a very restless sleeper now and it is time to move him to his crib--at night as well as for naps--so I can get some sleep. I have weaned him almost all the way--he just nurses a little in the morning and at night, but I don't need to nurse him to get him to sleep. In fact, it seems like I don't have to do much but be close by to get him to sleep. Still, since I have started this determined effort to get him to self-soothe and go to sleep on his own, it has been a never-ending storm of heartbreaking sobbing that I just can't take--and since his father and my older teenager must get up really early, I had to be considerate and stop the madness after 4-5 straight crying hours.

I have read all the current books about it and have tried the 3-days cry-to-sleep method with NO success twice already. It is painful.
There has got to be another method. I will try anything. Please help

My 3 year old has fits several times a day. She is demanding, bossy, and defiant. I have tried spanking, that doesn't work at all. I have tried time out but she just falls in the floor kicking and screaming. Same for standing in the corner. I have tried ignoring her, she just gets in my face. I have tried talking to her and she just screams. Last night she kicked and screamed for 2 hrs because I would not let her have her way. She finally wore herself out and went to sleep. I even put her in a room by herself but she won't stay. I am at my breaking point. I need help!!

My 4 year old son has trouble gaining weight no matter what foods or nutritional drinks I give him. There is only so much of his favorite foods I can give him. He is a picky eater at times so it is hard to get him to eat what he should. I just don't know what to give my son to eat any more. He loves any pasta especially with sauce or grated cheese. I don't know what other meats to give him as he isn't a big meat eater other than hot dogs or chicken nuggets or tacos. any other choices or suggestions?

My 4 year old son who I adopted from my husbands niece stays with his biological mothers mother who we tell him is is grandma. She raises her daughters daughter since she was 6 weeks old. She is 6 years old now. My son has been telling me that his sister has been kissing his peepee and he has been kissing her peepee. I asked the grandma about it and she says he is lying. She said he says that all day to get the girl in trouble. She even said he said it about me which is so untrue. When I asked him about it he said he was joking. When I asked if his sister was a joke he said no. She has done it in the past over a year ago. Do you think he is making it up and remembering along time ago? The grandma says there is no way because she has her eye on them all the time.
