My son is 3 and still drinks out of sippy cups but he also drinks from glasses too. Sippy cups are great for the road and regular cups are good for dinner and just being around the house. The sippy cup isn't really a huge deal of when to get rid of them. Let your child drink from regular cups and once you see that he/she has a good handle on it and doesn't spill so often then you can take the sippy cup away.

I gradually stop using sippies--for example even now at 8 months my son uses a sippy during meals, but at the end when the food is gone but there's a little formula left I take the lid off and he drinks it from the cup in the adult way for the rest of it. I will stop using sippies during meals when I feel he's ready to not spill all over, maybe at age 2? I can't remember when it was with my other kids. And now, for example, my 3 year old only has a sippy when she's carrying her morning juice around the house wtih her. She uses a regular adult cup at all meals and if she just asks for a drink during the day. The earlier you start training them to drink from a cup the regular way the easier it will be, but sippies definitely have their place as far as spillage up till age 3 or 4.

My daughter is almost 4 and still uses a sippy cup. She can use a normal cup just fine and does it regularly. However when she gets sleepy..or i have her cousin over and they are running around..or on car trips she still uses the sippy so i don't have to clean up a zillion spills. I personally don't see a problem with it..she drinks out of cup most of the time...its just like using a gatorade bottle with a squirt top. If you feel weird about it though..why not try a sports bottle for car trips or places where a drink really cannot be spilled then a regular cup the rest of the time.

She was about 3 1/2 years old when I told her that all the sippy cups were going away because she was a big girl now. Transition your child away from the sippy cup by using plastic cups - they are lighter and easier for little hands to grab and won't break if dropped.

my daughter is 19 months old and hardly ever gets a sippy. She only gets it when we go to somone's home who doesn't have children. she's been drinking from a cup with a lid and straw since around 13 or 14 months.

I think they were all about...2ish? As soon as I knew that they knew to leave their regular cups on the table and not go wandering through the house with them. I started them all on regular cups as soon as they were able to control them. My 1 1/2yr old daughter stopped using a sippy cup a couple of weeks ago.

You already can start practicing at 1,5 yrs. They already have a firm grip, just don't fill up the cup fully, but half.
I worked at a daycare center, at both a baby and toddler group. They went for a toddler group as soon as they turned 2 yrs old. By then they needed to drink from a normal cup.
