This is a question only for those who actually looked for signs of readiness in their kids, not those who think kids simply have to be out of diapers by certain age.

My son will be 2 and 1/2 next mnth. Now he is ready. He doesn't want to be in dirty diapers and he just started coming to me when he has to go. He likes to put toilet paper in the toilet and flush.
Both of my nephews weren't completely done being potty trained until they were 3. So, I feel like I'm right on track.

My friend took lots of critisism because her son wasn't potty trained til he turned 4. But.........I have to say he's never had an accident in 2 years. No wet beds for them!

18 months my son starting showing signs but I thought it was too early.
At age 2 I started seriously training and he was pretty much potty trained for #1 right away.

Now he's 2 1/2 and he is only *just* mastering the #2 part.
We we don't use the diaper (unless like last night, he wasn't feeling well and had two bouts of diahrrea, so I put him in a diaper for the night) - I don't think he was happy. He kept saying "I don't need no stickin' diaper" (we taught him that) ... so I kept saying "Mommy don't need no stickin' mess!!!" haha, that was too cute!

My 14 y/o wasn't that easy, she wasn't potty trained until 3 and I tried for a long time. But that was long ago and I don't remember details.

I have a 17 month old who loves to sit on the potty. But I have not *seriously* started training her. But I let her sit on the potty whenever she wants and we usually read a book or sing a song and by the end, she's ready to get up. She has not yet actually peed on the potty yet either.

I have 2 boys 18 months apart. We tried when the oldest was 2 1/2. (He didn't show any signs of wanting to go by himself). So, that didn't work. Then when our youngest turned 2 1/2 he just started going by himself. And our oldest followed him after about 2 weeks. So, within 2 weeks our kids had potty trained themselfs (at the age of 2 1/2 and about 3 3/4 of age). This is 2 years later and they have never had an accident at school, bedtime or any other time. When they are ready they are ready. I don't suggest forcing it on them. I watch a 3 year old that is was forced on right when he turned 2 and has an accident at least once someetimes more while he is at my house during 5 hours a day.

For my step-daughter, she showed sings around 1.5 years old, she's now 3.5 and still in pull-ups! She'll go to the potty most of the time on good days.

But she has had a lot of different stuff happen latly that might have caused her to go back to going in her pull-up. We just take one day at a time. Her daycare says that most of her kids really don't start until they're 3 or 4 so... it really depends on the child.

I have a nephew that I think was potty trained to early. He is 5 now and was PT by age 2, he has wet the bed at night ever since. Now I think that he was PT to early.

We always started potty training when the baby's first followed us into the bathroom.

Training starts with example and explaination. They follow us in, we go potty and talk to them all about being big kids and wearing underwear and going potty in the big potty and so on.

That spikes their interest and usually by 18 months they have their own routine and underwears and are trained.

I was taking care of my brother and I started tryin to potty train him at 3 years. That is when he started to show signs and plus he had some medical problems that caused him to be so late in training. He hasn't mastered it yet and he won't. He died last year because of the medical problems that he was born with. My two of my three daughters are potty trained. The oldest was little over a year when we started and mastered it by age two. The second oldest was two years and mastered it by 2.5 years. The little one is only 3 months so it will be a while before we train her. lol.

When they're ready, you'll know. Most have signs of being ready around 2 1/2 yrs. of age, so to the first answerer--being 3 and not potty trained is very normal.

Signs are them telling you they need their diaper changed, doing the "potty dance", and knowing what the toilet is and what it's for.

How long it takes for them to master it really depends on the child but also on the parent and the technique you're using to potty train them.
