A special area just for reading, maybe a small desk, with art supplies and workbooks just for preschoolers. I also hung a calender in my daughter's room, so she can learn her days of the week, and months. I also marked all of our birthdays in it too. I kept her room style pretty basic, so she won't outgrow it right away, but I do let her decorate it with posters and wall clings, things that can be easily removed.

Why not get him involved. I'd suggest making or getting large, fun cutouts of letters and numbers. Paint the wall a color or two and let him help you put them up. You also could put up a large piece of felt on the wall (use staples and a decorative border) and make cutouts of objects and the words that go with them. That way he can learn his words, spelling and speaking at the same time as he has a fun, decorated room and a place to play when you need a little quiet time. Good luck.

You could do an alphabet border.

You could go to the bookstore and find a picture book suitable for his age and get some inspiration too.

I put in a chalk board and a cork-board in my daughters room. It has been very helpful and she loves it. That way, you can change the lesson you are trying to teach from day to day.
You can find chalkboard paint at any home improvement store. If you want it to be magnetic, you must also put a coat of magnetic paint under the chalkboard paint. It is very easy to do, I used the spray-on type.

Have fun!

They have these foam number puzzles that come with different characters on them, they are numbered. I used these princess ones and hung them up on my daughters wall. They sell them at like walmart or even 99 cent stores. You can also buy colored construction paper and cut out different shaped and sizes to decorate the room.

Even coloring activity books have the alphabet on them and you could color them with your son, then hang them up. This way he learns his alphabet as well as be proud of his work.

We bought my 4 year old those wall clings that will stick to the wall, but not damage the paint. They have cute ones with the alphabet, transportation thems, etc. We used ABC's and transportation.

I decorated my son's room with flying demons, lakes of fire, and hellbent souls.

It's a good thing.
