Toddler & Preschooler - November 2006

[Selected]: All categories Pregnancy & Parenting Toddler & Preschooler

I have a toddler who I have never smacked, slapped or spanked. He spilt a cup of juice the other day and my dad piped up with 'you would have got a belting for that when you were small' I was pretty shocked by it, I mean he is only two and it was an accident, not that he would have deserved to have been hit even if it wasn't an accident. I am a bit scared to leave him alone with my dad now incase he punishes my little one in this way.
Do parents still do this with their kids today or is it an old fashioned way of dealing with bad behaviour? I have never made a concious effort not to slap my son I have just never considered it. To be honest he has never made me so mad that I have hit out at him. I hope I never do because as an adult I feel I should be able to control my anger when dealing with a child otherwise who is more of a child me or him? I know some of you will probably get mad about my way of thinking but be honest do you really go away and think about your childs misbehaviour

I know there are a lot of devices on the market. Isn't there a vacuum cutter that sucks the hair up and cuts it evenly? Or does just a plain old electric shears work? Or do you just pull out the scissors? (I"m not going to a barber or paying for one each month!)...

Are there any cool self-hair cutting gadgets out there?

My daughter was sneezing a little bit today and woke up 20 minutes ago with a nasty green snotty nose and pulling at her ear. She had played with her ear today but I chalked it up to teething. Any suggestions....our flight is in 8 hours. Oh and not one flight...2. we have a layover

My daughter slaps me and her grandma in the face. I've never struck my daughter but somehow she picked this up. At first we thought she was just playing but as she grew older she started getting worse. She pinches our noses and lips with fierce grip. Has anyone gone through this? If so, what's a good approach to eliminate this problem?

My granddaughter will be 3 years old next month, and we are having great difficulty trying to potty train her. Anytime the subject is approached, she starts screaming, "No, no, no! We have tried almost everything, even the "singing" potty, to no avail. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

She walks around holding onto things and I even got her a little walking push toy to help gain her confidence. Everyone seems surprised when I tell them that she isn't walking on her own yet. Should I be worried??

What should I do? I already took him the to the doctor and they said he has the stomach flu. It has been 21 hours now and he has only had about 16 oz of milk and each time he drank that he would vomit. I have tired Pedialyte and juice and even diluting the two but he doesn't like juice at all. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get clear liquids in my son so he doesn't dehydrate. Thanks a bunch!

My son is 3 & a 1/2 & I'm really having a hard time when it comes to potty training. I have been patiently trying with him for over a year & have run out of ideas. I have tried everything from bribing him with candy, money for his piggy bank, to using a potty chart that I made for him with stickers & a reward for him at the end of the week for completing at least 5 potty uses for that week. He knows exactly what the potty is for & will sit on the potty without getting up for up to an hour unless I say it's ok, but he doesnt want to grasp the concept of having to use it on a regular basis. When he does use it, I praise him & tell him how good a job hes done & when he doesnt use it, I'm clam about it & dont push the issue too much. I don't know what else to do with him. He's pretty lazy when it comes to the potty.Hes so advanced for his age when it comes to everything else, but he's lacking this ability. What other choices do I have besides putting him in underware & having him wet himself?

ok I asked about this 4 months ago and wanted to add some additional info on it.

Ok my daughter who is 28months old she is dx'ed with a speech delay. she gets speech therapy, developmentalist comes too along with an OT person and a behavoirist. this is a typical day.

She is up at 6:00am and will scream until she has something to eat, she will zone out for about 2-3 hours every morning watching blues clues or sesame street ( dont give me hell about that she likes it and it keeps her calm and she dont play until late morning) she still doesnt eat very much and yes she still take a bottle ( dont even go there with me since even her developmentalist and dr. who is seeing her for developmental prob is not worried about it she is not your normal 2 yr old) she doesnot get full on the bottle and mainly only gets water in it anyway. She mainly will eat crackers, cheese, popsicles, cereal, hotdogs, bread and spaghetti what i make is what she has to eat and i wont make anything else

Problem with son and pets?

I'm so embarrassed but my pre-school son is obsessed, and I mean obsessed by animal butts. He grabs our pets and stares at their rear-end every chace he gets. He also has a little aggression toward one cat of ours. He holds the cat down by the nceck. Not to choke her, but to hold her still while he gets in her face and "talks" to her. Needless to say, the cat doesn't like it and I'm concerned he'll accidentally hurt her.
So if anyone has advice or has experienced this, please let me hear from you.
I'm not looking for mean replies about the animal butt issue. It's a real concern of mine. I could understand once or twice but it happens all the time. And yes, we've talked to him and even punished him for bothering the pets but he won't stop. I hope someone will tell me this is a "normal" preschool boy thing, or tell me what to do.
Thank you!

I am a nanny for 2 kids and sometimes the parents stay home which can be very stressful for me cos they tend to change my routine. i have not spoken to them about it cos i do know how to approach the topic without causing hard feelings.. sometimes when i have to put the kids down for a nap they insist that i should let them stay up.. i personally think a nap is needed esp when the kids are cranky and won't stop crying. any help on the matter would be highly appreciated.
