I am an art teacher, and I teach a preschool art class. I have kids from just 3 yrs to almost 5 in my class. A very common and very important thing for kids to draw is their family (the most important thing in the world to them). I think around 3 most kids can begin to make some sort of person. A circle with the making of a face, and then maybe some arms and legs -- coming from the head, is common. Eventually, they will get to bodies, etc. My daughter is almost 5 and just started to draw bodies this week. She draws all the time though -- some days she will spend 3-4 hrs "making my art".

I am going to refer to a website that takes u thru the steps of artist development. Your daughter is probably moving from scribbling to pre-symbolism. There are lots of illustrations on this site.

I have an artist as well. My daughter was drawing very well by age 2. She is now 5 and can draw things like Mickey Mouse better than most adults. My son turned 3 yesterday...and he can draw circles pretty well, but all else is scribble. He has only just begun to notice to color in a coloring book. I think he is more typical.

Each child develops at their own pace. Your daughter sounds perfectly normal.

I remember my daughter was about 18 months old when she started drawing little circles with eyes, a nose, and a mouth. She's three now, and the other day she drew a picture of herself and her friend at the playground-- with the slide, bouncy-horse toy thing, and swings all in the right place. And the she actually drew the "baby" swing with the leg-holes in the middle! I was amazed.

Yes it is.Hey with any luck your little girl might want to be an artist when she grows up, so when shes 8 instead of watching TV all day she will be drawing and doing her homework.Encourage her and sometimes draw with her.Wish u luck.

I think my sis was 3 or 4 when she started doing that. She learned at Daycare. My son will be 2 in Feb. and he is still learning scribbles.

She sounds bright. I'd say that 4 is the right age though....but usually parents have to coach them step by step to get them to draw people, so......

it is ok, because most children dont start drawing until they are 5 or so! you should be glad she started semi early.
