My son is 3 & a 1/2 & I'm really having a hard time when it comes to potty training. I have been patiently trying with him for over a year & have run out of ideas. I have tried everything from bribing him with candy, money for his piggy bank, to using a potty chart that I made for him with stickers & a reward for him at the end of the week for completing at least 5 potty uses for that week. He knows exactly what the potty is for & will sit on the potty without getting up for up to an hour unless I say it's ok, but he doesnt want to grasp the concept of having to use it on a regular basis.When he does use it, I praise him & tell him how good a job hes done & when he doesnt use it, I'm clam about it & dont push the issue too much. I don't know what else to do with him.He's pretty lazy when it comes to the potty.Hes so advanced for his age when it comes to everything else, but he's lacking this ability.What other choices do I have besides putting him in underware & having him wet himself?

He's probably not truly ready for it. However, if he gets to be 4, u may have to push him a tad. What we normally do is that we would keep them on the diaper during night, but have them in their underwear during the day. U may want to do this when u are off from work, so that way u can keep an eye on him. U have to keep asking him if he wants to "pee pee" or "whatever" Sometime, they will let u know and that's when u take them to the small potty. Don't reward him, just say "That's a good big boy". Have his daddy take him to the bathroom when he uses it as well, so he can see how it is being done. It takes time, however, we just need to be patient thru out the whole process. They never said parenting is easy ;0) When he is fully trained, than u can take him off the diaper for good, even when it's his bed time. Good luck, and I know it's all will be fine and done with. And u will look back on this and laugh.

lots and lots of patience.........and remember that each kid is different - you really can't force him. With my son the sticker chart worked. Each time he used it my husband and I made such a big deal of him being able to choose any sticker he wanted and put it anywhere on the chart he wanted to that he was only too happy to do it.
Have you tried throwing a cheerio in the toilet and have him aim at it. This might work for #1.

STOP putting him in underwear! He is NOT ready to potty train that is WHY he doesn't "want" to.
