I think its a great idea to buy your son a doll. Why shouldn't boys learn compassion and how to be a caretaker too? I have a son who is now 5, but when he was 2 he carried a doll around with him for a few months. No harm done, he doesn't play with his doll anymore, now he is into dragons and dinosaurs, but even if he did still play with his doll that would just fine. Good for you for not stereotyping your son with typical boys toys.

With small children, I think that people read more into this behavior than what is really there; my godson loved my daughters Barbies when he was 2-3. But, what i took notice of is HOW he entertained himself with the doll. He would sit there swinging it in circles so the hair would fly or bite the feet; he wasn't combing hair, cuddling it etc. Eventually it passed and I haven't seen him with a doll since!
Ultimately, you have to be careful with what you try and forbid where a child is concerned, because it has the converse effect and makes them even more interested in it.
Now, buying him a doll, could be a tad bit much. Ponder that a little 1st; him playing along with his sister toys and having his own doll collection (boy doll or not) are 2 different things. Get him some wrestling men or a spider man DOLL. Anything more is definitely sissifying in my book.

It is absolutely fine and also very healthy. At that age, kids don;t distinguish between male and female roles and therefore they are not biased. A boy enjoys playing with a doll just as much as a girl does and that helps to build a sense of caring for others in boys. Don't be ashamed if he plays with girl baby doll.

My son picks up his sisters doll every once in a while. He usually picks it up gives it a hug and a kiss on the top of its head, then drops it and plays with trucks instead. I think he's trying to figure out what a baby is, his sister is actually younger than him, he's 2 she's 9 months. I think he's trying to imitate me in his crazy little 2 yr old way. I wouldn't buy him a doll all his own though. If you're having doubts your obviously a little uncomfortable with the idea of buying your son a doll.

To him it's just a toy. I have a girl who just turned 3 and my son is 21 months old. He plays with what she plays with which a lot of the time are dolls. It is normal. Don't restrict his play because you are afraid of him playing with toys. You can always get him a "boy" doll and tell him that it's a doll for little boys to play with.

My son had a baby doll when he was 3. He wanted a baby when I had one. He out grew the doll rather quickly. He is a healthy 16 year old. He plays guitar, cello and football. And he is great big brother!

Absolutely ok. Remember My Buddy Doll? A doll MADE for boys. Cabbage Patch kids made boy buddy dolls too. You could get him a boy doll.

I personally think it's okay for boys to play with dolls; especially at his age. When a girl plays with dolls every one thinks it helps her to learn to be a good mother. Well what about boys learning how to be good fathers? There are a lot of fathers playing a big role in raising their children these days. Seems like they should learn good parenting skills too.

my little cousin did something similar as a child. His parents bought him a doll and he played with it and it worked well when his little brother was born. He is now 11 years old and wants nothing to do with dolls and is into everything little boys are into. I honestly see no harm in letting him play with one. Just my opinion.

It is ok for boys to play with dolls. If he does not have any dolls in "his" toy box he sees his sisters playing with something new to him, something he does not have. An action figure is a doll, fireman, soldier, policeman, etc....
