this isnt a question. but rather a guide for fish for people to genreally steer clear of. just thought that the lives of hundreds of fish were worth 5 points

"sucker fish" aka plecos (uless you have a 50g tank)

oscars (ok if you have a 55 gallon tank)

pacu (dont even bother unless you have about 500 gallons)

red tailed catfish (1500 gallons minimum)

arowana: omg, i love this fish. i have one. but unless you have a tank that is 200 gallons, please dont buy one

dragon gobies (brackish)

any species of puffer really isnt a begginner fish

ANY SALTWTER (lose the nemo, saltwater is hard work)

no bowls for fish

goldfish

any fish is a no-no if you havent cycled your tank!

jaguar cichlids (150 gallon tank)

dyed fish

piranhas (they are catualy not that exciting anyway)

stingrays

generally any brackish water fish

discus

if you do want to keep any of the monsters listed above, contact FishRfine on monsterfishkeepers.com (thats me) id be glad t

I have a 10 gal tank that is about 4 months old - with and assortment of about 10 mollies/platys. I have recurrent brown algea and I can't seem to get rid of it. I clean the tank every sunday and do a 25% water change and vaccum the gravel. I scrub the tank walls and remove the algae and in 3 days or so it's back! I am running an air stone, and 20 gal filter because of the amount of fish I have in the tank. The water is not murky, and is very clear actually....I have heard it's because I have too much light- then I hear that I don't have enough light! I just don't know how to get rid of it aside from what I'm doing already. Any suggestions....thanks!

Ok we want to clean it but not sure if it will hurt the fish with the windex. How about bleach?

I read the bottle and it says several times a day the size of a penny in the palm of the hand for 10 fish. is this only one flake or layers of flakes as thick as a penny? I guess for 5 it would be half that. It does not seem like near enough.

It is clearing out the gravel piece by piece and has also managed to move 2 small decorations to cover the hole. It is very interesting to watch but I have no idea of the purpose.

I live in South Carolina and have an ultraviolet light in my koi pond skimmer to keep the water clear in the summer months. Would it be wise to removed it in the winter so it will perhaps last longer? Also, should I turn off my water fall in the winter? Or at minimum not run it 24 hours a day? I have about 3 dozen goldfish and four koi. The water at the deepest part is about 30 inches.

I only got the shrimp 4 days ago so I haven't done a water change. It spends most of it's time on this piece of bogwood, should I poke it off (as I need to remove it to gravel vac)?

Will it hide while I'm vaccing? Obviously if the tank is dark as the lid is flipped up I won't be able to see very well.

Anyone's experience would be great, thanks!

I have a 75 gallon tank with some piranhas and was wondering what is better to do. Are you supposed to change the filter using the manufacture's recommendations every month or whatever or are you supposed to use the same filter just cleaning it from time to time with tank water? I heard cleaning the filter is better because it keeps the bacterial. What do you guys do? thanks

Basically if I caught a fish that had scales, and removed the scales would the fish be able to survive in the water, and if not why not.

When I tore down one of my tank and started over, I drained all of the water out. I forgot to unplug the heater, and the heater was exposed to the air for 10 seconds or more. Before that, the heater heated my water to a uniform 78 degrees. Now it only heats to maybe 70-71 degrees? I'm gonna get a new heater. How long will this heater last before I have to get a new one. I've been way too busy with school.

My water pH is quite high (roughly 8.5-9.0), I have been considering a reverse osmosis unit to lower it. Would an r/o unit solve my problem? I would like to lower it for a future planted setup. I have read that plants would prefer a lower pH such as 7.0 - 7.5, do these numbers matter for plants? Thanks for the help!

I want to get a pleco fish ( the fishies that eat algae off the side of your tank) but i don't know if it would have enough food. Right now I have only one beta fish and I havent cleaned the tank in about three months. There is a film of green algae on the side. I was wondering if the pleco would eat alot of algae fast or if this supply of food would replenish itself faster than the pleco can eat it...........if the pleco would eat this and fast, is there like a type of food you can buy at a store to feed the pleco until more algae grows?
