For a live plant you will need:
A tank with water in it
A live plant
Some source of AQUARIUM lighting (not household bulbs)
A source of CO2 for the plant
Fertilizer/AQUARIUM plant food
Some great plants for beginners are: Java Fern/Moss, Banana Plant, Anubias, and Cryptocoryne. All of these plants don't need CO2 and fertilizer (but it would be great to have some), and they all need low lighting. I'll provide some links for you in the source.

You should be able to find live plants at any fish store (Petco and Petsmart have them too). Be sure you are buying aquatic plants though, not terrestrial (land) plants... If you put a land plant under water for long periods of time, it will soon rot and die. Some pet stores exploit this and place terrestrial plants in their tanks, knowing that people will buy them, they will rot, and people will come back and try again...
To grow plants, you need light, nitrogen (in the form of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate), and other trace elements like iron, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. There are many liquid fertilizers like those made by Seachem, API, and Tetra, as well as root tabs. For lighting, you will want a light with a light temperature of either 6700K or 10,000K for maximum photosynthesis potential. You will also want to add CO2, but it is not necessary. For the best results, use easy-to-keep plants like Java Moss, Java Fern, Banana Plants, Onion Plants, Swords, Vallisnerias, and Cryptocorynes. Contact me if you have any questions.

EDIT: The last thing you want your AQUATIC plants to get is sunlight. In sunlight, you will see massive amounts of algae form on the plants, glass, and decorations. Keep the TANK LIGHTING to 8-12 hours a day for optimal plant growth.
EDIT 2: Amazon Swords are great plants for beginners. Again, CO2 is nice, but not necessary. You will want a good amount of light, and fertilizer, but other than that, there isn't much else to do than watch it grow! Remember, many plants, including Swords, will degenerate when transplanted. They will grow back though, to their former glory. Good luck.

Put simply? A plant for an aquarium needs:
-Enough water to stand full height
-Enough gravel to cover the roots and take root in
-Something to create fertilizer (basicly a fish that poops....)
Plants don't need much and they can usualy do well on their own. The fish that live in the tank are the only worry. Some fish like to eat or tear some plants up, but you should just need to plant it and leave it be.

Well if you want a plant in a fishtank, then all need is the plant and fish to produce waste for the plant to take nutrients from. All you have to do is put the plant's roots under the gravel and let it grow. You can pick up live plants at any local pet supplier. Just ask your supplier about the best fit for your tank.

You need a pot, some potted plant dirt, and some water. You can either plant one from a seed or go to a gardening store and buy one you like. You can find all kinds. You can even stick a sweet potato into a glass of water half-way up, set it in a sunny windowsill and it will grow. There are some seeds you can get from the fruits and vegetables you buy at the store.

If your keeping it in a tank with fish, all you need is a substrate, and light. (The light from the tank lid should be enough.)

Soil, water, sunlight. Extra nutrients, like those plant food sticks, can't hurt either.
Also, what kind of plant is it? Different ones have different needs.
