When I tore down one of my tank and started over, I drained all of the water out. I forgot to unplug the heater, and the heater was exposed to the air for 10 seconds or more. Before that, the heater heated my water to a uniform 78 degrees. Now it only heats to maybe 70-71 degrees? I'm gonna get a new heater. How long will this heater last before I have to get a new one. I've been way too busy with school.

As long as there are no cracks, chips, or parts that were previously unexposed and are now exposed, you have nothing to worry about except for a tank that is a bit on the cold side... You should definitely get a new heater as soon as possible to avoid too much stress on your fish at cooler temperatures, but, depending on the species of fish you keep, it may not be that urgent. Contact me if you have any questions.

there is no definite answer on how long it will or will not last. it all depends on whether or not there is a crack in the heater or if one of the elements just got severed.

if there is a crack this could be a very dangerous issue with having it in a body of water as I'm sure we all know by now that water and electricity don't mix.

if its just a loose connection to the heating element you should be able to crank up the temperature gauge and use it till you can get yourself a new one.

now the real question is do you even need it? if this is a new set up and your still cycling the tank then you wont need the heater in the tank until a couple of days before putting your fish in the tank. it shouldn't take more than 48 hours for the heater to oget the tank up to the right temperature.

hope that helps!
