Hi Experts,

I have a 55 gallon tank with two big driftwoods and many small community fishes. I have few plants like java etc. in that too. I want to convert the same to a planted tank. Need advise on gravels, CO2, plants , lights. Where I will get cheap gravels for planted tank ?

If you want a cheap, nutrient rich sand, look no further than your local pool supply store. Pool filter sand (diatomaceous earth) is full of nutrients necessary for good plant growth, and can easily be purchased for about 50 cents (U.S. dollar) a pound. Be sure to wash this very well before adding it to the tank or it will become extremely cloudy.

For lighting, you will want either T-5 or compact fluorescent bulbs for optimal growth. Bulbs in the 6700K or 10,000K light temperature that (combined) provide more than 100 watts are best for photosynthesis in conjunction with CO2 (do it yourself or a purchased canister) and fertilization. Any fish stores should carry different liquid fertilizers (that are all basically the same thing). Do you have Java Moss or Java Fern? Either way, they are both very tolerant of different lighting and nutrient setups. Also consider Anubias, Cryptocorynes, Vallisnerias, Sagittaria, Banana Plant (Nymphoides aquatica), Tiger Lotus, Rotala, Ludwigia, and Bacopa. All make great additions to any planted tank and all are relatively easy to care for. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
