I have read mixed things about them being all okay together. Will having 4 or so in my 29 gallon work out?

Space definetly is a plus here. Males are going to be more aggressive towards other males for one. They exhibit the same territorial behavior as a Male Betta in some regards and similar like African cichlids as well. A general guideline to sex Gourami is looking at the dorsal fins and the mid sections of the body. While this doesn't hold true to all Gourami, generally speaking, males have longer dorsal fins that almost touch the tail fins, and females are significantly rounder in the midsection, sometimes looking like they swallowed a golfball.

You can mix them, but they will need spacing. A 29 isn't an exceptionally large spacial area, but if you were to keep only one male and the rest being females, I think you'd see the aggression subside.

Eventually, you will see one come out as the dominant fish, and it will continue to beat up on the other Gouramis. The best ways to combat this are to separate them so you either have each Gourami in it's own tank, get a bigger tank with more hiding areas, or keep two in the same tank with plenty of hiding spaces and hope that it works out well... As long as you leave them together, there will be fighting...

I have had numerous different kinds of gouramies in one tank, i had them chase each other, but never actually fight or damage. i wouldn't put many more in a 29 gallon though
