I have 2 questions. 1 - My goldfish recently have black color near the edge of its tail and fin. Is it natural? I try to look at some of the diseases that goldfish has and I couldn't find anything like it. The reason that I put this up is because the goldfish in my large tank doesn't show those black color and the large tank is usually cleaner than the small tank, so I was worry that the problem might be the dirty water,so.... 2 - One of the comet goldfish in my large tank has 2 little holes on its dorsal fin and 1 little hole on its tail. The goldfish is about 2 1/2 inches long and it is in the tank with a big pleco, 3 little comet goldfish about its size and 2 large comet goldfish. My question is: Is it something to worry about?

I bought my son our first 10 gal. aquarium for his birthday last month. We were told that Platies, Mollies, and a few other fish would be best (she suggested we start with 6 fish). First we bought two platies, then added two more tiger barbs a week or so latter (people at Wal-Mart said they were good tank mates, ha ha). The tiger barbs were MEAN to the platies (nipping tails, chasing endlessly) so we removed them and the next day one of the platies died, probably because my dh unplugged the heater and forgot to plug it back in overnight. So we have had just one platy now for a few weeks. My son loves him but I want to add more fish and I'm nervous. Do you think our platy is lonely and needs companion fish? Should we only add other platies, if so how many for a 10 gal. tank? Would it be ok to mix in some mollies too? Any advice or thoughts would be great. Thank you!

I've been having alot of sick fish and I have just resolved myself that guppies and mollies just aren't the fish for me!! It seems like everything I do just kills fish. I have checked the water and done tons of research of every type of fish I own. I've purchesed tons of medications that never works and I'm sick of it! So now my last guppy is dying (unless he magicaly pulls out of it) and I was wondering what would be a good, cheap fish that would be SUPER easy to take care of?

I have 2 fancy guppies and 2 albino cory catfish. About a week ago I noticed that the cory cat had fin rot so I had been treating the entire tank for that. However, in the last couple of days I've noticed that one of my fancy guppies wasn't looking so good. He was not fanning out his tail fin and along the back edge there seems to be a red line. He is not holding his back straight (his tail seems to sag) and he isn't very active. Is it possible that the guppy is allergic to the medication?
I thought that one of the signs for fin rot was a white fuzzy substance on the fins. Is it possible for it to be red and the fin rot have spread to the guppy? If so, the instructions on the fin rot medication says it's almost time to stop treatment. Do I continue treatment for the guppies? The albino cory cats still aren't fully healed!
So, as you can see, my tank is VERY sick! I've had the water tested and it was a little acidic, so I've been adding ph increasers. Please HELP!!!

Hey there - I react violently (allergy wise) to freeze-dried bloodworms - but I'd still like to give the boys a special treat every once in a while....since its that time of the year here, would it be alright to scoop some mosquito wigglers out of some of the ponds here and feed them those?
Are they close enough to bloodworms?
Or should I stick to giving them cheddar?
(they get a pin head every week)

I don't have anything but a 1 gallon fish bowl my ex-Betta (RIP) used to live in. I do however have an extra submersible heater that I am using with it. I believe she has ick, so I put some aquarium salt in the bowl and used an 1/8 of a tablet of LifeGuard All-In-One treatment as well. Is this okay? I am terrified to leave her in the quarantine tank for fear it will kill her, but I'm also terrified of leaving her in the main tank and having her die. Any ideas or suggestions?

Hello, Well here is what is going on. My last three water tests with my liquid test kit, have came back nearly unmeasurable. nitrate 0, nitrite 0, ammonia 0, ph 8.2. So one would think i'm cycled right? Well, thats is not the case, as i took some water to the lfs today his readings differed than mine. ammonia0, nitrite0, nitrate between 0 &.003ppm. ph@7.8 ...that indicates i'm close to cycled with low ph right? Well, here is the problem. I just added a clean up crew 2 days ago(to clean brown alge bloom) 10 red leg, 10 blue leg hermits, 1 coral banded shrimp,1 serpent star. So, if my tank was not completely cycled i will have a hard time now with the added waste(ammomia) from the clean up crew. What should i do?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------BTW, I added some ph buffer today for the low ph problem.-----could my last 3 test readings be wrong? or, do you think the 2 different tests gave 2 different readings?

I heard about having a "salt cup" in a freshwater fish tank that puffers can live in. I saw it in a fish tank at Wal-Mart, it was essentially an open petrie dish of salt, and puffers were huddled in it, or at least not too far from it. How would I go about doing this? Anyone familiar with this?
