I need to catch some snappers

I used to teach at a university, and the herpetologist (reptile and amphibian expert) and the student wildlife society would get calls to remove snappers from ponds all the time. The safest way is to use a trap which the turtles can enter, but not escape. Part of the trap needs to be above water, or the turtles will drown.

You might try contacting some local schools, especially the biology departments or your state's fish and wildlife department for advice or help.

Snapping turtles can be dangerous so I don't recommend you try any of these suggestions, but in the past I've used anything from fishing line and bait to wading into the water and picking the turtle up. Really it just depends on how big the turtle is, they can get quite large and of course, their necks become very long and they strike as quickly as a snake and boy do they bite hard! So really, size up the turtle and determine if you need a net or not, or maybe just you need to get him to bite a broomstick while you pick him up out of the water!
